About Wrights Lake Campground

Campground in California.

Wrights Lake Campground offers a pristine mountain retreat in the heart of California's Sierra Nevada, where towering pines frame crystalline alpine waters and granite peaks create one of the most picturesque camping settings in the region. Situated at elevation, this national forest gem provides an escape from the summer heat of the valley below, making it an ideal destination for RV travelers seeking cooler temperatures and natural beauty during peak camping season.

The campground's primary draw is Wrights Lake itself, a stunning alpine lake renowned for its clear waters and scenic backdrop. The area appeals to outdoor enthusiasts of all types, from anglers hoping to catch mountain trout to hikers eager to explore the surrounding wilderness trails. The lake's accessible shoreline and relatively calm waters make it suitable for various water activities, while the cooler mountain air provides relief during hot California summers. The granite peaks and dense forest surrounding the lake create an almost cathedral-like atmosphere that many visitors find spiritually renewing.

For those who love hiking, the location serves as an excellent base for exploring multiple trails that wind through pristine alpine meadows and connect to the broader Desolation Wilderness area. The elevation and mountain setting mean that visitors should come prepared for cooler evenings and potential afternoon thunderstorms, but these conditions also mean fewer mosquitoes and a generally more comfortable camping experience than lower elevation sites.

The drive to Wrights Lake Campground takes you through beautiful Sierra Nevada scenery, with winding roads that showcase dramatic mountain vistas around every curve. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure. Once settled at the campground, visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, the quality of starry nights at elevation, and the refreshing mountain air that permeates the entire experience.

This destination suits families looking for a mountain adventure, retired RVers seeking a serene getaway, and outdoor enthusiasts wanting to base themselves near excellent hiking and fishing opportunities. The combination of natural beauty, accessible lake activities, and proximity to wilderness makes Wrights Lake Campground a memorable stop on any Northern California RV journey.

Don't go here! You'll hate it! I love it, it's one of my happy places, so stay away. In all honesty, this is an amazing campground. The scenery is awe inspiring, if you like to kayak its a beautiful little lake with a wonderful surprise on the other side ( and keep an eye out for the eagle who likes to hang out on the east end of the lake). If you like to hike, there's plenty of hiking for all ski... If you like to hike, there's plenty of hiking for all skill levels. We stay in the tent only camping, it's the best, but even the rv/trailer loop is good. I did have to drop a star because of Royal Elk management, the two hosts Joan and John (I think that's his name), aren't the easiest to deal with. Joan isn't bad, but John is pretty much a jerk (keeping it kid appropriate). He does a pretty good job of keeping the bathrooms clean (which is appreciated) but his campside manner ends there. He's about the most unpleasant person I've ever encountered camping. He wears earbuds listening to something while he talks at you, drives around the campground extremely fast on the golf cart so you can never catch up to him to 'interrupt' his work. Several times he would pull up to our campground and stare at us and our site, presumably to see if rules were being followed, but not even a hint of a smile nor a response to trying to talk to him before speeding off again. We've camped at a few campgrounds managed by Royal Elk and there people are rarely who I'd like to interact with.

1st time here. We stayed at #62 which was a big lot w plenty of space to pitch up tent. Big lot enough to play frisbee. We brought cornhole. Plenty of areas for fishing. 5 min walk to lake w beautiful landscapes. Smaller hiking trails along the lake (family friendly). Took a hike around the lake about 3 miles. Would definitely come back next time w rafts and inner tube for the lake.

Place was closed down for camping when we went hiking. Beautiful place and weather was perfect for a hike but make sure to bring bug repellent, there was a ton of mosquitoes.
