About JUNIPER LAKE GROUP

Federal campground in California.

Nestled in the volcanic landscape of northeastern California, Juniper Lake Group offers a unique camping experience within Lassen Volcanic National Park. This destination captures the raw beauty of California's geothermal wonderland, where ancient lava flows, pristine alpine lakes, and towering conifers create an unforgettable backdrop for your RV adventure.

The Juniper Lake area sits at approximately 6,800 feet elevation, providing cooler temperatures and crisp mountain air that offers respite from California's heat. The lake itself is a stunning natural feature, its clear waters reflecting the surrounding peaks and forested shores. The peaceful setting makes it an ideal destination for those seeking quietude and connection with nature, away from the more crowded portions of the park.

The camping experience here appeals to visitors who want to explore one of California's most geologically fascinating regions. Lassen Volcanic National Park showcases the dramatic power of volcanic activity, with features visible throughout the surrounding landscape. The park's volcanic heritage creates an educational backdrop for your stay, offering context for the unique terrain and ecosystems you'll encounter.

The area provides access to some of the park's most scenic locations without the intensity of traffic found at more popular entrance areas. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with chances to spot mule deer, coyotes, and various bird species throughout the seasons.

The Juniper Lake Group location is particularly appealing to RV campers who enjoy outdoor recreation, photography, and natural history. Whether you're interested in fishing in alpine waters, exploring volcanic formations, or simply enjoying peaceful evenings under clear mountain skies, this area delivers an authentic California mountain camping experience. Without a doubt, one of the best car camping spots around. Visited in the late summer of 2022. The Dixie Fire had burned through the year prior and the campground had not fully recovered, as there was still major damage throughout. Nonetheless, I arrived midweek and had the place to myself. Visited in the late summer of 2022. The Dixie Fire had burned through the year prior and the campground had not fully recovered, as there was still major damage throughout. Nonetheless, I arrived midweek and had the place to myself. As others have said, the access road is part dirt. But with careful driving, I made it in with no problems (see pic of the car I drove). Right on the lake and nice sites. At the time, no potable water. Vault or porta potties only, but all sites have fire rings bear boxes, and picnic tables. There is a trail around the lake which is a great few hours walk. There is also the Mountain Harkness trail, which climbs about 1200 feet. But you are rewarded with amazing views in all directions and good cell coverage. Both are in the moderate level. If you are one who enjoys seclusion and off the beaten path camping, consider this.

First come first serve campsites. Easy access to lake on the north side. Bring your swim suit and kayaks. Lots of hiking spots near by. Sites farther away from the lake are more secluded. Last 5 miles of getting there is not paved. Luckily we survived with our Prius, but it was heart pounding. AWD is recommended.

This is our family's favorite place to camp! The campground is small and primitive, but very beautiful and peaceful. The sites are first come first serve, with 2 reservable group sites.

Lovely campgrounds with spacious camp sites, some right on the lake. Only 19 sites, first-come, first-served. Fairly rough road to get there, outhouses well stocked with TP and Purell. Convenient access to trailhead to hike up Harkness
