About Upper Lehman Creek Campground

Federal campground in California.

Upper Lehman Creek Campground sits nestled in the heart of Great Basin National Park, one of Nevada's most spectacular and least crowded natural treasures. Located near the California-Nevada border, this campground offers RV travelers an exceptional gateway to some of the most pristine wilderness in the American West. The campground itself provides a peaceful mountain setting where tall pines frame your campsite and the sound of Lehman Creek provides a soothing natural soundtrack throughout your stay.

The Great Basin National Park surrounding this campground is famous for its stunning diversity of landscapes and ecosystems. The park encompasses everything from high desert valleys to ancient bristlecone pine forests and dramatic mountain peaks. Visitors consistently rate their experiences here as transformative, with the park offering a rare combination of solitude, natural beauty, and accessibility that's increasingly hard to find in popular vacation destinations.

The crown jewel of Great Basin National Park is the magnificent Lehman Caves, a stunning underground marble cavern system that ranks among the most spectacular cave formations in the United States. Tours wind through glittering chambers decorated with rare shield formations and delicate stalactites and stalagmites. The caves maintain a cool, constant temperature year-round, making them a perfect refuge during hot summer days. Above ground, the park offers excellent hiking opportunities ranging from easy valley walks to challenging alpine treks with rewards of sweeping vistas across multiple states.

For stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts, Upper Lehman Creek Campground provides access to some of the darkest skies in the nation. Great Basin National Park is designated as an International Dark Sky Park, meaning minimal light pollution allows visitors to witness the Milky Way in all its glory. Clear desert nights reveal countless stars, planets, and celestial phenomena that city dwellers rarely experience. The park regularly hosts astronomy programs where rangers share knowledge about the night sky.

The landscape surrounding the campground transitions dramatically with elevation, creating unique ecological zones within short distances. Visitors can experience desert flora in the lower elevations, transition forests in mid-elevation areas, and alpine environments near the summit of Wheeler Peak. This diversity means wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with chances to spot mule deer, coyotes, pine martens, and numerous bird species throughout your stay.

The nearby town of Baker provides basic services and supplies for campers, though the remote location means planning ahead is wise. The drive to the area is scenic and rewarding, taking you through beautiful high desert landscape that only builds anticipation for the natural wonders ahead. RV travelers appreciate the park's relatively compact size, which means you can experience multiple attractions during a single visit without extensive driving.

This destination appeals particularly to nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking authentic wilderness experiences away from crowded tourist destinations. The campground's high elevation and mountain setting attract visitors looking to escape summer heat, and the spring and fall seasons offer particularly pleasant camping conditions. Whether you're interested in hiking, caving, stargazing, or simply breathing fresh mountain air surrounded by ancient forests and dramatic peaks, Upper Lehman Creek Campground serves as an ideal base camp for exploring one of America's most remarkable national parks.

Great campground. Sites are unique and it is not crowded at all. Vault toilets were clean. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. No water was available at all. The Lehman Caves Visitor Center (about 3 miles away) has water and a dump station. We were in a tent. If you are towing a large trailer, check ahead. It appeared that many of the sites could not accommodate a long vehicle.

It is a national park campground in Great Basin National Park on the Nevada Utah border. It is at 8500 feet altitude, steep, rocky and forested with a diverse sub-alpine forest. There is a very fast moving, loud stream on South edge. Our camp was 50 ft from it, absolutely beautiful as it was wildflower season. There are nice, clean vault toilets, picnic tables, and water faucets coming next year,... It is a national park campground in Great Basin National Park on the Nevada Utah border. There are nice, clean vault toilets, picnic tables, and water faucets coming next year, they are being installed this summer. BRING YOUR WATER! You can get some at Lehman Cave visitor center and at the RV waste dump if you have containers. This visitor center also has a good cafe and souvenir shop. There is no food in the gateway town of Baker available except for some prepackaged camping food at the stargazer in.

The campsites are a bit close together and there's no water spigots. But sites are clean and well maintained. Most parking pads were on a minor slope.

Campsites are big and tables are set back from the road. The sites at the top end near the creek are loud with the sound of the creek even in September.

Upper Lehman Creek Campground was quiet, clean and a wonderful place to camp. Their vault campground toilets were some of the cleanest I’ve ever used while camping! That’s a plus!! It is close to fishing, hiking, the visitor center and Lehman Caves tour. The campsites all seemed spacious from my walks throughout the campground. I will definitely come back!
