About Shady Lane RV Camp, Barstow

Simple

Nestled in the high desert landscape of Barstow, California, Shady Lane RV Camp offers a welcoming retreat for travelers passing through or exploring this unique region of Southern California. Located at 36445 Soapmine Road, this RV park provides a comfortable home base for discovering what the Barstow area has to offer, whether you're a cross-country traveler, desert enthusiast, or family seeking an affordable camping experience.

Barstow sits at the crossroads of major highways and serves as a gateway to some of California's most distinctive natural attractions. The area is known for its dramatic desert terrain, wide-open spaces, and abundant sunshine throughout much of the year. This makes it an ideal location for RV travelers who want to experience authentic desert camping while maintaining convenient access to services and supplies. The town itself has evolved into a popular stop for those traveling between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, offering a strategic location for breaking up longer journeys.

The surrounding region provides plenty to explore for outdoor-minded visitors. The Mojave National Preserve is within reasonable driving distance, featuring vast expanses of desert wilderness, unique rock formations, and scenic vistas. The area is also known for its rich mining history, and visitors can explore remnants of this heritage throughout the region. For those interested in automotive history and Route 66 nostalgia, Barstow has become something of a hub for classic car enthusiasts and historic highway travelers, with various vintage shops and attractions celebrating mid-century Americana.

The high desert climate creates distinct seasonal experiences. Winters are mild and pleasant, making it an excellent destination for snowbird travelers seeking to escape colder climates. Summers are hot and dry, but the lower humidity compared to other parts of California can be appealing to those accustomed to desert conditions. Spring and fall offer particularly comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities and exploration.

Shady Lane RV Camp serves as a practical headquarters for your Barstow adventure, offering the comfort and convenience that RV travelers need after a day of exploring the desert landscape. Whether you're using it as a quick overnight stop or a longer base camp for regional exploration, the park provides a convenient location along Soapmine Road for accessing local amenities and attractions.

The park was easy to find. It is located just off of Old Highway 58. The area looks a little rough but it was quiet and safe. There is pavement all the way until you reach the park. There is pavement all the way until you reach the park. Signage is adequate. Check in was efficient and friendly. Hmmm One is asked to fill in the registration details yourself. There were NO rules posted or expressed but expect the normal to exist. We were somewhat alarmed by the presents of a snarling Pit Bull that eyed our Poodle. It was chained so did not cause any harm. There were lots of dog dropping everywhere so some pet owners are lazy and the operator doesn’t seem to care. The interior roads are gravel/dirt and in reasonable condition. Our site, 09, was a pull thru that was long enough for our Coach and Towed. Services (30/50 amp, water, cable and sewer) were to the left side. Distancing is close for a rural park. Some sites had a vegetation privacy barrier. Each site has a concrete patio but NO table or fire pit.. Our site was flat and even. Overall the park was old and tired looking. Not much has changed since we were here last in October of 2011. The residence are mostly permanent and some sites are pretty trashy. There is park included wifi and cable TV but we did not use either. We did not search for any OTA channels. Satellite might be difficult in some spots re the tree canopy. We did not use the washrooms or showers but we checked and found them clean but dated. There are no restaurants or stores within easy walking distance but just a short drive away you can find food, shopping and convenience stores. We found this park to be a passable overnighter. We paid $54.00 per night (Good Sam Discount) and we feel the price was a little high. We will NOT be back . There does not seem to be any pride of ownership anymore.

A great little park with reasonable rates. We are using this a final jumping off spot before running onto Long Beach tomorrow. Will be a regular stop from now on. P.S. The employees are terrific BTW. And of you need gas, get it WAY CHEAPER at Food for less Barstow

Older property, but clean, level gravel sites. Wonderful owner, Don, showed me to my spot and gave me time to get set up before checking in at the office. Easy to get to from 15 and convenient to town. Clean bathroom and showers. Got a handy map of the area from Don. Permanent residents are very friendly. As others have said, don’t judge a book by its cover. I will definitely stay here again.
