About Anthracite Pass #1969

A very difficult day hike to a mountain pass through groves of aspen, pine forests and open meadows offering wonderful views of surrounding peaks. Due to the steep terrain, this trail is recommended for experienced backpackers. Camping is prohibited within 100 feet of the trail and streams. The trail starts a quarter mile up Yule Creek trail and ends at the pass. This is a short, very steep trail. Most people agree that the climb is worth the beautiful views from atop the Raggeds Wilderness. The

Unfortunately we did have to walk our dogs in the dark and I ran into a pole sticking out of the ground that is used for horse shoes so use a flashlight when walking in the dark. Overall a great spot and we were visiting from Colorado Springs and we'll definitely stay here again.

Stayed using an RV (C Class). Well appointed and professionally run. Access to the river for fishing. Bathroom facilities are very clean and well cared for. Park hosts and staff are friendly and welcoming. Road noise can be a little loud occasionally. Have not stayed in the rooms but based upon the rest of the park, I would think they are also well maintained.

Being able to walk down to the river was awesome. We enjoyed sitting in our lawn chairs watching the sunset from the yard area by the pool. I have always enjoyed campgrounds like this one where the owners take pride in providing a great camping experience. Headed toward Salida? Stay here! My highest recommendation!

We’ve stayed at Bighorn 3 times now, camping at campsites #1 and #2 down by the river and it has been absolutely fantastic. Brenda and Aaron are the best! Their motto of customer first shows every time. The bathroom/showers are always clean, a requirement for the wife. The Campsites are right on the water and secluded from the RV park and the view of the river and canyon hills on the other side... With a little luck you can see bighorn sheep visiting the river to drink. We are checking out tomorrow and plan to make our reservations next July for our 4th visit. Thanks Brenda and Aaron!

Great place to stay. I was only there for two days but they are very welcoming. Had a chance to fish the river there at the campground and had great luck both days. The average size of the trout was 17 inches. It's not far from Canyon city or the Royal Gorge.

Amazing views and so much space. Do keep in mind that there are no restrooms or phone service here. Also, you might want a vehicle with decent clearance. Bumpy roads!

Beautiful campground. The road up is rough and slow going. Didn’t need to engage 4x4 in my f-150 but it was bumpy with 10% incline in a few spots.

We visited in July 2019. There are less than 10 sites (6?), It's about $20, bear lockers are at each site, there are vaulted toilets and no cell service. It's nicely situated on the lake and had good tree cover. The road recommends 4WD I would recommend having an SUV or at least good clearance truck if you plan on coming here. We had no issues in our stock Subaru Outback.

Portal campground is awesome. Sits next to Grizzly reservoir. Free, but donations are appreciated for the volunteers who maintain it. There is a limited number of spaces (7 or 8) and they go fast on weekends. The road to it along Lincoln Creek is 6 miles of dirt, gravel, and rock. Rough is an understatement, but it is totally worth it.

This site was great. There were 7 sites available. We drove up early morning of 17th of June. The need for a high clearance vehicle with 4x4 is seriously recommended. The drive itself its quite beautiful along the Lincoln Creek Rd. There are 22 free sites along that road on your way to Portal as well. Once you see the buildings there by the side of the Grizzly Reservoir you are pretty much there.... This site was great. There were 7 sites available. We drove up early morning of 17th of June. There are 22 free sites along that road on your way to Portal as well. Once you see the buildings there by the side of the Grizzly Reservoir you are pretty much there. It had 7 sites all with their different perks. Some closer to the Reservoir some closer to the creek, some well shaded areas, some in between. Either way we had a great 3 night stay at the 5th site. Right next to the creek, clear view of the Reservoir and a great spot for the tent in a semi circle of trees. Just back down the road a bit is the trail head for the Grizzly Lake trail which we hiked for a few hours til we got to the snow line before turning back. All in all a very fantastically beautiful area and I would go back there again sometime. Vault toilets were as one would expect. Mosquito situation this trip and time of the year was pretty non existent. Remember sunscreen! You will burn and burn fast in the sun up there.
