Big Meadows/Archuleta Trailhead #839 offers a remarkable escape into the heart of Colorado's natural beauty, providing RV campers with direct access to some of the state's most spectacular outdoor adventures. Nestled in a region known for its pristine wilderness and mountain vistas, this public campground serves as an ideal basecamp for those seeking to experience Colorado's finest landscapes and recreational opportunities.

The surrounding area is characterized by towering peaks, expansive meadows, and dense evergreen forests that create a quintessential Rocky Mountain setting. The location's elevation and geography provide crisp mountain air and stunning views that change dramatically with the seasons. Summer visitors enjoy mild temperatures perfect for hiking and exploration, while fall brings remarkable aspen color that transforms the landscape into shades of gold and crimson. The natural setting offers a genuine connection to the outdoors without the commercial feel of many private facilities.

What truly sets this location apart is the proximity to the Archuleta Trailhead, which serves as a gateway to exceptional hiking and backcountry exploration. The trail system in this area attracts outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels, from casual day hikers to serious backpackers seeking multi-day adventures. The meadows themselves are beautiful destinations for morning walks and wildlife observation, with opportunities to spot deer, elk, and various bird species throughout the day.

This makes it particularly attractive to experienced RV campers, outdoor adventurers, and families looking to introduce children to wilderness camping. The location works wonderfully for those planning extended stays who want to use the campground as a hub for daily explorations.

Such a fun and relaxing place to experience camping and outdoors. The lake is a short walk from any camp site you choose and because this location is set on a hillside every spot has a million dollar view. The lake has a beautiful trail all the way around as well as others that branch off. 3 water falls within a short walk and great fishing from either shore or out in the middle.

Beautiful campground. My brother fished and I read a book by the reservoir. The vault toilets are very clean. The campsite was big enough for 2 two-man backpacking tents. Would definitely camp there again.

What makes it great? First, when compared to private/ commercial places, you are not piled in tight with other people. Here, we were at about 25 feet from the nearest site and there were trees between us. Second, the view from our site (A23) was great- even though we could not see the lake. If you look at the photos, our RV was above the table and fire pit. Other sites were reversed (the table and pit are above the road). Third, the cost was $26. Finally, the lake area, while being about half a mile away, is beautiful with lots of trees and there were a lot of people fishing. There is a ramp to launch boats. The road to the campground is paved for a few hundred feet and the dirt part was maybe a mile long but very flat.

Beautiful and amazing campground! Camp sites are well defined and easy to find. The bathrooms are very well kept. However, there are no showers. That's just fine to experience such a gorgeous reservoir!
