Nestled in the heart of Colorado's San Isabel National Forest, Boustead Tunnel Observation Site offers a unique camping experience for those seeking solitude and natural beauty in the mountains. This public campground serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring one of Colorado's most interesting historical and geographical features—the Boustead Tunnel itself, an engineering marvel that demonstrates the ingenuity of early water management in the Colorado high country.

The area surrounding this campground presents a landscape of stunning alpine scenery, with towering peaks, dense evergreen forests, and pristine mountain streams. Campers here will find themselves immersed in the peaceful sounds of nature, far removed from the hustle and bustle of developed areas. The elevation and mountain setting create crisp, refreshing air and spectacular starry nights that make for memorable camping experiences. The natural surroundings provide excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, with chances to spot elk, mule deer, and various bird species throughout the seasons.

This location appeals particularly to history enthusiasts, geology buffs, and outdoor adventurers who want to understand Colorado's complex water infrastructure and mining heritage. The tunnel itself represents a fascinating chapter in Colorado's past, when ambitious projects were undertaken to divert water for mining operations and agriculture across the Continental Divide. Visitors can learn about this engineering achievement while enjoying the pristine wilderness that has reclaimed much of the area.

The campground makes an ideal base for hiking, fishing, and exploring the surrounding San Isabel National Forest. Numerous trails wind through the forest, offering varying difficulty levels for different skill levels. The nearby creeks and streams provide opportunities for those interested in fly fishing or simply enjoying the calming presence of running water. The relative remoteness of this location means less crowding than many other Colorado campgrounds, making it perfect for travelers seeking a more intimate connection with nature and a chance to experience Colorado's authentic mountain character.
