About Dispersed Camping

Informal camp sites with no services or facilities

Dispersed camping in Colorado offers RV travelers an authentic outdoor experience that captures the true spirit of adventure in the American West. This type of public camping provides access to vast stretches of undeveloped land managed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, allowing visitors to park their RVs in some of Colorado's most scenic and remote locations. The flexibility to choose your own camping spot from dozens of available areas creates a unique sense of freedom that traditional campgrounds simply cannot match.

Colorado's dispersed camping landscape is remarkably diverse, ranging from high alpine meadows with stunning mountain vistas to desert-like terrain with dramatic red rock formations. Many dispersed sites sit at elevations between 8,000 and 10,000 feet, offering cool summer temperatures and crisp mountain air that provide a refreshing escape from the heat of lower elevations. Whether you're nestled among towering Ponderosa pines in the northern forests or perched on a mesa overlooking vast valleys, the natural beauty surrounding dispersed sites is consistently breathtaking.

The appeal of dispersed camping extends to those seeking solitude and a back-to-nature experience without the crowds typical of developed RV parks. With minimal to no amenities, these sites reward self-sufficient travelers who come prepared with their own water, power, and waste management systems. This style of camping attracts adventurers, nature enthusiasts, photographers, and families looking to disconnect from the hustle of everyday life and reconnect with each other and the natural world.

Colorado's dispersed camping areas provide excellent access to some of the state's most iconic outdoor attractions and recreational opportunities. Hikers will find countless trailheads nearby, while fishing enthusiasts can access pristine streams and alpine lakes. Mountain bikers, rock climbers, and wildlife watchers all find exceptional opportunities in these regions. The moderate 4.4-star rating from nearly 40 reviews reflects the genuine appreciation visitors have for this rustic camping style, where the experience itself becomes the destination rather than the amenities.

The dispersed campgrounds are located at the south side of paid campground. Turning left once you see the sign saying campgrounds you will find 22 of them. Spent the night there before Pyramid Peak, about 40 minutes drive from here. Pretty quiet on Friday night, got about 6 cars passed me, I was at campsite 1.

Amazing dispersed campsite just 20 minutes down the road from Aspen. There is a river that runs through and from a few of the sites you are able to hear the water rushing which is lovely. When camping here you are very close to excellent climbing and a dozen awesome trailheads. Not sure if this is true for all but our site was very dusty/ashy so I would recommend some extra wipes for sure. Also, 4... Amazing dispersed campsite just 20 minutes down the road from Aspen. Also, 4wd is highly recommended or at least a larger vehicle as the road down to the dispersed sites is very rocky.

My daughter and I were there mid week in June. It was wonderfully relaxing. There was some confusion as to whether we actually had to pay. We thought it was dispersed camping. I ended up paying just because any funds provided I'm sure will be put to good use. The campsite that I paid for was not ultimately where we overnighted. We were on the quiet side (from the roaring spring runnoff waterfall).... My daughter and I were there mid week in June. It was wonderfully relaxing. The campsite that I paid for was not ultimately where we overnighted. We were on the quiet side (from the roaring spring runnoff waterfall). My daughter used my brown coffee mug to rinse out her watercolor brushes. Long story short, my brown mug never made it back into my truck. This is a special mug, and looks pretty cheap and plastic. It's not. It's made of coffee hulls and advertises a Vietnamese-German University Masters in Sustainability Urban Development (SUD) program. If anyone has found this, I would be so grateful to have it sent to me (in Az).
