About Dispersed Campsite

Campground in Colorado.

Colorado's vast public lands offer some of the most authentic and affordable camping experiences available to RV travelers, and dispersed campsites throughout the state exemplify what makes camping in this region so special. These undeveloped camping areas, managed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, provide a genuine connection to the Rocky Mountain landscape that many travelers seek when they venture into the high country.

Dispersed camping in Colorado means freedom and flexibility. Unlike developed campgrounds with assigned sites and facilities, dispersed campsites allow you to find your own spot on public land, often with minimal fees or completely free camping options. This approach attracts adventurous travelers who appreciate solitude, stunning natural scenery, and the ability to explore at their own pace. The landscape around Colorado's dispersed sites varies dramatically depending on elevation and location, from sage brush valleys to dense pine forests and dramatic mountain vistas that shift with the seasons.

What makes dispersed camping particularly appealing is the access it provides to Colorado's incredible outdoor recreation. Many dispersed campsites are positioned near excellent hiking trails, fishing streams, and scenic byways that showcase the state's natural beauty. Mountain biking, wildlife viewing, photography, and simply enjoying quiet evenings under star-filled skies are just some of the activities available. The elevation of these sites often means cooler temperatures even during summer months, making them ideal for those seeking relief from heat.

Colorado's dispersed camping areas attract a diverse crowd of visitors. Families on extended road trips appreciate the low cost and flexibility. Solo travelers and couples value the peace and natural setting. Outdoor enthusiasts use these sites as basecamp for hiking and exploration. Retirees in RVs enjoy the freedom to stay as long as permitted and move on when they choose. Because these are public lands, the camping experience feels genuinely wild and wonderfully uncrowded compared to developed facilities.

The practical reality of dispersed camping requires some preparation. Cell service may be limited or nonexistent, water and waste facilities aren't provided, and services can be far from camp. However, for those seeking authentic mountain camping with stunning Colorado scenery and genuine outdoor immersion, these trade-offs create the exact experience many RV travelers dream about.

Nice area. Gets busy so arrive early! We had a nice time. Views were spectacular and people seem to keep to themselves. No restrooms or running water. Roads are bumpy but no high clearance needed.

Amazing free dispersed camping spot in the mountains with breathtaking views of Pikes Peak and surrounding ranges. Highly recommend for nature lovers and peaceful getaways. A few teens can get noisy at times, but it’s generally quiet and scenic. Get there early—prime spots are limited and fill up fast!

It starts off as a VERY long & VERY bumpy road. I’d recommend driving slow. Be weary of the big pickup trucks that speed down this road as well; there are lots of blind spots. I got there at about 1900. I didn’t have an issue finding a spot for my tent & car but there were quite a few people camping around. But all the campers were respectful of each other; the night was quiet. Oh, it does get HEL... It starts off as a VERY long & VERY bumpy road. I’d recommend driving slow. Oh, it does get HELLA windy up there, depending on where you pitch your tent!! Being extra blankets or Pj’s !!
