The United States Congress designated the Eagles Nest Wilderness (map) in 1976 and it now has a total of 133,496 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Colorado and is managed by the White River National Forest. The rugged mountains of the Gore Range are at the heart of the Eagles Nest Wilderness and serve as a major contribution to the waters of the Colorado River. Melting snow in the spring plunges from the heights to create thundering creeks, verdant meadows and spectacular wildflowers

Beautiful wilderness area. We did the Meadow Lake Trail to Lily Pad lake in late September. The changing aspens were gorgeous. The trail was pretty active so we had to move to the side frequently to let other groups by, but that’s expected for an easy trail with beautiful views near town. It also rained during the hike so the trail was a bit slippery in the steep spots, but that’s just nature. Lov... Beautiful wilderness area. Really fun area to hike with my wife. Weather was perfect in August and views were spectacular. Hike was switchback and semi steep but very much doable. Would highly recommend.

Amazing 3 day backpacking trip in the northern section near Elliots Ridge and Peak C. Great weather, but the mosquitoes definitely were not heeding the deet. Many great hikes that can be easy or difficult with off-trail hikes and passes begging to be explored.

Beautiful evening walk among the aspen and wildflowers. I saw 2 buck and a doe while meandering about.

Eagle's Nest has very limited access and poor quality trails. The heart of the range is one of the wildest places in Colorado but tough to reach. No fourteeners and exceptional mosquitoes.
