About Haviland Lake Campground

Campground in Colorado.

Haviland Lake Campground offers a serene mountain escape in Colorado, where towering pines frame crystalline alpine waters and the pace of life slows to match the rhythm of nature. Located in the San Juan National Forest, this public campground provides an authentic Rocky Mountain experience that appeals to everyone from seasoned campers to families seeking their first backcountry adventure.

The campground's crown jewel is Haviland Lake itself, a stunning alpine reservoir surrounded by dense forest and dramatic mountain scenery. The lake's cool, clear waters invite fishing enthusiasts to try their luck catching trout, while the peaceful shoreline beckons those simply seeking quiet reflection. Whether you're an angler hoping for a productive day on the water or someone who enjoys morning coffee while watching mist rise off the lake, the water-centered setting creates an undeniable magic that makes this destination special.

What makes Haviland Lake particularly appealing is its location in one of Colorado's most scenic mountain regions. The San Juan National Forest encompasses some of the state's most dramatic and unspoiled landscapes, with elevations that bring cool relief during summer months. The forest surrounding the campground provides excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and photography. The area is home to abundant wildlife, and morning or evening walks often reward visitors with sightings of deer, elk, and a variety of bird species. The tall ponderosa and spruce forests create natural shade throughout the campground, making summer camping remarkably comfortable even at higher elevations.

This campground appeals to a wide range of travelers. Families appreciate the relatively accessible location and the safe, contained environment the lake provides for children. Fishing enthusiasts find genuine opportunity rather than just scenic backdrop. Hikers and nature photographers discover endless subject matter in the surrounding forest and along various trails. Couples seeking romantic getaways find the peaceful ambiance and mountain views incredibly conducive to quality time together. Those escaping urban stress discover the restorative power of alpine solitude.

The nearby town of Bayfield provides reasonable access to supplies and services, ensuring you're not completely remote while maintaining that backcountry feel. The drive to the campground itself becomes part of the experience, as you wind through progressively more spectacular mountain terrain, leaving the lower elevations behind and ascending into genuine high country.

Highly recommend!! One of the best and cleanest campgrounds we have stayed at. Best campground hosts ever!! There is a very beautiful picturesque lake for fishing and possibly swimming in the summer. We will definitely keep this campground on our places to stay when we come out west. We stayed two nights and did not want to leave, so hopefully, next time, we will stay even longer!

A beautiful lake, people were catching fish, we were there to relax by the lake side. Campground looks appealing, want to go back sometime to camp there.

Comfortable well wooded campground. Several enjoyable hikes next to the campground. There is a small lake with crayfish and fish. Several people were fishing from the shore and kayaks, too. They do take walkins, but definitely better to reserve a spot.
