About Jersey Jim Lookout

Live a little bit of history and enjoy an incredible view in Southwestern Colorado with an one- or two-night stay at the Jersey Jim Fire Lookout Tower. Formerly used to detect fires, the live-in tower rises from an aspen-lined meadow in the San Juan National Forest at almost 10,000 feet above sea level. The Tower cab includes the original furniture and propane heating and lighting. Guests must bring their own supplies. Water is available from a hand pump at Transfer Campground four miles before

Jersey Jim Lookout is a scenic public campground nestled in the heart of Colorado's stunning landscape, offering RV travelers an authentic mountain camping experience away from the hustle and bustle of crowded commercial parks. Perched at elevation, this campground provides visitors with breathtaking vistas and a genuine connection to Colorado's natural beauty that keeps guests coming back season after season.

The location itself is a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The surrounding terrain offers countless opportunities for exploration, whether you're interested in hiking, photography, or simply soaking in panoramic views of the Colorado wilderness. The elevation provides cooler temperatures during summer months, making it an ideal escape from heat found in lower elevations. Early mornings and evenings are particularly special here, with wildlife viewing opportunities and dramatic lighting that make the mountain landscape truly memorable.

What makes Jersey Jim Lookout particularly appealing is its blend of accessibility and authentic outdoor experience. As a public campground, it welcomes RV travelers of all types and experience levels. The setting attracts visitors who appreciate unpretentious camping, where the focus is on natural surroundings rather than elaborate amenities. This is the kind of place where you'll find fellow travelers who share a passion for Colorado's outdoors and appreciate the simple pleasure of camping under Colorado skies.

The surrounding area offers plenty to explore. Colorado's mountain communities provide opportunities for provisions, dining, and supplies when needed, while the campground itself serves as a peaceful base for adventure. This is a once in a life time experience. Plan to go as if you are camping and bring your supplies. The views are incredible! Don't forget to watch the hummingbirds! It is 70 steps to the top and you are at 9960 feet so plan accordingly. We absolutely loved the experience.

Went back in 2017 and totally forgot to write a review of this incredible trip. Met family there and kids loved this experience, as did the adults. The views are incredible and the hummingbirds are everywhere; including one that got caught inside the top of the tower. Glad we reserved this place, instead of camping outside due to the summer thunderstorms that roared through every afternoon/evening... Glad we reserved this place, instead of camping outside due to the summer thunderstorms that roared through every afternoon/evening. It was nice to be inside and held us all during these storms. The sunsets were incredible every night and we felt alone on top of the mountain. It was a painful process to get this and I tried for years to reserve, so ended up emailing them and they were so nice to give us the following year (2017) to come up and enjoy the serene environment.

Well maintained, beautiful views of La Plata mountains, Ute Mountain, Blue Mountains in Utah and the Montezuma Valley. We really enjoyed our stay and will be booking another night next year!

I learned of this place years ago and have had it on my list ever since, but the telephone reservation system was painful and I gave up after a few years of trying. That is until they moved to an online reservation system, which was a huge step in the right direction. I was able to reserve two nights although they were not consecutive nights due to my narrow travel window and drawn out reservation... Everything about this experience felt so old-school and authentic. If you have a chance to experience it you will see what I mean. I don't even know where to start. Loved it! Highly recommend it!
