About Mosca Campground

Campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado, Mosca Campground offers RV travelers an authentic mountain camping experience in a region known for dramatic natural beauty and outdoor adventure. This public campground serves as an excellent base for exploring one of Colorado's most scenic and less-crowded areas, where vast horizons meet towering peaks and the pace of life slows considerably.

The San Luis Valley itself is a geographical wonder, stretching across 8,000 square miles of high-altitude terrain. At elevation, you'll experience crisp mountain air and some of the darkest night skies in the state, making this an ideal destination for stargazing enthusiasts. The valley's unique geography creates a diverse landscape that ranges from open grasslands to forested areas, providing stunning views in every direction. The nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains form a dramatic backdrop that changes color with the light throughout the day, from golden at sunrise to deep purple at sunset.

One of the region's most notable attractions is Great Sand Dunes National Park, located relatively close to the campground. This remarkable landscape features massive sand dunes that rise up to 750 feet against the mountain backdrop, creating an otherworldly experience that feels more like a desert adventure than a typical Colorado outing. Visitors can hike, sandboard, or simply explore this unique ecosystem where sand dunes meet alpine mountains. The contrast between the dunes and surrounding peaks makes this one of the most photographed landscapes in Colorado.

Beyond the dunes, the area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The valley is home to diverse wildlife, and birdwatchers will find numerous species throughout the seasons. Fishing enthusiasts can explore several rivers and streams in the region, including the Rio Grande, which flows through the valley. The quieter, less-developed nature of this region means you'll experience Colorado's natural beauty without the crowds found in more popular tourist destinations.

Mosca Campground appeals to a wide range of travelers. Families appreciate the accessible nature of the area and the variety of activities suited to different ages and fitness levels. Outdoor enthusiasts seeking hiking, wildlife photography, and scenic beauty will find endless opportunities. Those looking to escape crowds and experience a more remote Colorado setting will feel right at home. History buffs might enjoy exploring the rich cultural heritage of the San Luis Valley, which has a fascinating history spanning centuries.

The small towns near the campground maintain a genuine mountain community character, where you can find local dining, supplies, and the kind of hospitality that makes smaller communities special. The valley has a slower pace that encourages relaxation and connection with nature, making it perfect for those looking to unplug from the bustle of everyday life.

Very well located. Came here for one night as I didn't want to stay two nights at sand dunes. Opted for a car camp the first night here and it was the way to go. The campsite was very clean, we got there at there were plenty of spots available at 9pm. John was able to receive us and check us in. I would highly recommend staying here. The only downside is no running water in the bathrooms but other than that the outhouses were plenty clean.

The lake is extremely low and often dry. The campground is located in San Luis Valley so be prepared for sandblasting winds(awning @own risk)Beautiful 360' view of snow capped mountain ranges. 14 day minimum. Campground open year-round. Recommend buying an annual Colorado SWA pass which covers all swa sites throughout Colorado for 56$ per person at Mosca store or pay 10$ per day per person (under 16 free) at Mosca store. All first come sites. Rarely fills up. Just a few miles from Sand Dunes NP.. 17 miles from Alamosa.. 1 hr north to Salida..2 hrs north to Leadville. The camp host has been there for years. Very clean, safe and quiet. This is our go to when traveling through that area. Please pick up after yourself ...many sites but only one camp host.

Awesome campground if you're looking to go to the Dunes. It's free (!!!) & each campsite has a charging station - it's an outlet with multiple sockets that work for RV charging or your phone! Some sites had picnic tables & others had canopies - from what I gathered all of them had firepits with grates. The only bummer was the ants, but we didn't notice them in our tents just at the picnic table. Y... Awesome campground if you're looking to go to the Dunes. The view of the stars is absolutely breathtaking at night - it feels like a map of the constellations is 50ft from your head. This campground was maybe a 10min drive to the entrance of the Great Sand Dunes park? I recommend it to every friend when they go to the Dunes.
