About Pinyon Flats Campground

Campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the scenic San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado, Pinyon Flats Campground offers RV travelers an exceptional base for exploring one of the state's most captivating mountain regions. Located near the charming village of Crestone at an elevation that brings crisp mountain air and stunning vistas, this public campground serves as the perfect launching point for adventures in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

The Crestone area has become increasingly known among travelers seeking authentic Colorado mountain experiences away from crowded tourist corridors. The surrounding landscape presents dramatic mountain peaks, expansive valley views, and a genuine sense of remoteness that appeals to those craving peaceful natural settings. The elevation and location provide cooler temperatures during summer months, making it an ideal escape from hotter climates across the region and country.

What makes this area particularly special is its combination of outdoor recreation opportunities and cultural character. The nearby town of Crestone itself has evolved into a creative community with artistic and spiritual significance, attracting visitors interested in unique Southwestern culture. The San Luis Valley's wide-open spaces create those unforgettable sunset experiences that remind travelers why they chose the RV lifestyle in the first place.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the location provides excellent access to hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the Sangre de Cristo range. The valley offers opportunities for photography, wildlife observation, and simply reconnecting with nature at a slower pace. Stargazing here is particularly remarkable due to the area's minimal light pollution and high elevation, creating some of Colorado's most impressive night skies.

This campground appeals to a diverse range of travelers: those seeking mountain scenery without extreme crowds, nature photographers drawn to the dramatic landscape, outdoor recreationists looking for hiking and exploration, and anyone desiring a peaceful Colorado mountain retreat. The setting works equally well for extended stays or as a strategic stop for those traveling through south-central Colorado exploring the region's diverse attractions.

Clean, comfortable, good views. The bear lockers worked great. You will definitely want to check individual site pictures before booking a pad as some pads could barely hold an 8x8 tent and others could hold two easily. They also say two car limit but the parking spaces by pads varied just as much for if they could comfortably hold 1-2 cars. The campground store was open but hours were a little... They also say two car limit but the parking spaces by pads varied just as much for if they could comfortably hold 1-2 cars. The campground store was open but hours were a little weird with the shutdown affecting them. There was still a site host/ranger who checked in to make sure the people at sites had the correct reservations and a ranger who did rounds for trash daily.

This is a very nice campground with clean restrooms and you can walk right out to the dunes. The only reason I docked it a star is because the sites are fairly close together and sadly there were a lot of people playing loud music on Bluetooth speakers late into the night and fairly early in the morning. I was impressed though that the second night park rangers actually drove through the campground multiple times enforcing rules related to trash and dogs being off leash.

This campground is in the Great Sand Dunes NP. It has beautiful views overlooking the Dunes and mountains beyond. There are a lot of sites, but spaced enough that they feel relaxed and adequately private. Bathrooms have running water.

Loved the beauty and remoteness of this campground! The view of the sand dunes and mountain range from the campsite was spectacular!Although there were no showers, the bathrooms seemed brand new and were immaculate! Hiking trails were very accessible and host/hostess were responsive and helpful. We will definitely return to this beautiful place!
