About Tarryall Reservoir SWA

No overnight camping.

Tarryall Reservoir State Wildlife Area offers a pristine Rocky Mountain camping experience in the heart of Colorado's high country. Nestled at elevation in Park County, this public campground provides an authentic gateway to some of the state's most spectacular natural landscapes. The reservoir itself is the centerpiece of the experience, reflecting towering pine forests and dramatic mountain vistas that shift throughout the day as light plays across the water.

This destination appeals particularly to anglers, water enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to escape into Colorado's wilderness without sacrificing access to quality camping facilities. The clear mountain air, expansive sky views, and genuine sense of solitude make it an ideal retreat from the bustle of everyday life. The surrounding terrain showcases classic Colorado scenery with dense coniferous forests, rolling ridges, and the kind of natural beauty that draws people to the Rocky Mountains year after year.

The location serves as an excellent base for outdoor recreation. Fishing is a primary draw, with the reservoir offering opportunities throughout the season. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding wilderness, with routes ranging from accessible walks to more challenging backcountry adventures. Wildlife viewing is exceptional here, with visitors regularly spotting deer, elk, and various bird species. The State Wildlife Area designation means the entire region is actively managed to support native flora and fauna, creating an environment that feels genuinely wild and undeveloped.

The nearby town of Lake George and the broader South Platte River drainage region provide cultural and historical context to your camping experience. This area has deep roots in Colorado's mining and outdoor heritage. Even if you're not fishing or hiking, simply spending time by the water and breathing in the mountain air provides genuine restoration and perspective.

Whether you're planning a summer escape, early fall adventure, or spring getaway, Tarryall Reservoir delivers the Colorado high country experience many RV campers are seeking. The combination of scenic beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities, and quality public camping infrastructure makes it a worthwhile destination on any Colorado camping itinerary.

I loved the drive up from Lake George. The waterfall has no public access right now unfortunately. What a tranquil place! Most people had noiseless watercraft, but it was a bit too windy. Looking at the snow capped mountains with the spring foliage, I've come up with the word "Spwinter."

Tarryall itself is one of my all time favorite places to camp... the reservoir is huge... individual spots for spending the day with tables... they have restrooms, definite plus... the dock where the boat ramp is, is nice to chill on when people aren't crowded around... fishing, hiking, paddle board... ice fishing when the water is frozen... can even see a bald eagle if you are lucky... look aroun... Love this reservoir. Nice trout fishing both above and below the reservoir. The drive here is beautiful. It's a curvy drive with beautiful photo opportunities. It's out of the regular rush of traffic and it's not unusual to see wildlife in this area. Elk, bear, mountain lion etc. They have several areas for camping and have outdoor toilets.

Reservoir was nice and scenery was beautiful! The only complaint is the campgrounds... people left a lot of trash, broken glass, shot gun shells, toilet paper, you name it. Its truly disappointing how disrespectful people are to our home. What happens to "leave no trace"? I wouldn't recommend bringing your kids here as there are a lot of hazards lying around
