About Vallecito Campground

Campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the heart of Colorado's San Juan Mountains, Vallecito Campground offers RV travelers an authentic mountain camping experience surrounded by some of the most stunning natural scenery in the state. Located near the charming town of Bayfield, this public campground serves as the perfect basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore one of Colorado's most picturesque regions.

The campground's setting is truly remarkable. Towering pine and aspen forests provide a cool canopy overhead, while the nearby Vallecito Reservoir creates a sparkling centerpiece that reflects the jagged peaks of the surrounding mountains. The elevation and forest environment mean cooler temperatures even during summer months, offering a refreshing escape from the heat of lower elevations. Early mornings bring mist rising off the water and the sounds of mountain wildlife stirring to life, creating an immersive natural atmosphere that reminds visitors why they fell in love with RV camping.

What makes this location particularly special is its access to world-class outdoor recreation. The reservoir itself is a haven for fishing enthusiasts, with opportunities to catch trout and other species throughout the year. Hiking trails crisscross the surrounding mountains and forests, ranging from leisurely walks suitable for families to challenging alpine treks for experienced hikers. Mountain biking, kayaking, and photography opportunities abound for those seeking active pursuits. During winter months, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, attracting visitors interested in winter sports and peaceful snow-covered camping.

The nearby town of Bayfield provides convenient access to supplies, restaurants, and local services without requiring long drives from your campsite. The region's rich history includes mining heritage and Native American cultural significance, adding depth to the landscape you'll be exploring. Weather in this mountain setting is generally mild, with the forest providing protection from intense afternoon sun.

This campground appeals to families seeking a safe, beautiful destination; outdoor adventurers wanting direct access to pristine wilderness; retired RVers looking for a peaceful retreat; and anyone seeking to disconnect from urban life while maintaining basic campground amenities. The consistently high ratings from previous visitors speak to the quality of the experience this location provides.

Wish we could have stayed more than a day for each visit. The hosts, a husband and wife, were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

I wish there were showers but most National Park & National Forest campgrounds don't have showers, so it is what it is. Regardless, this was a beautiful campground with excellent hosts, and it was very clean and organized. Even the vault toilets/bathrooms were very clean. Again, this campground was so nice that I will definitely be coming back here in the future.

The campground is beautiful, clean, and peaceful! The sites are shady and well spaced. Not much in the way of amenities but that's part of what makes it peaceful and exactly what we wanted! The trail is breathtaking! The camp hosts were friendly and informative. Can't wait to go back!

My husband, my dog, and I had the most wonderful experience at Vallecito campgrounds! The campsite is extremely well maintained, the bathrooms remained clean the entire week we were there, and there is a beautiful trail/hike with beautiful views easily accessible right behind the campsites. There is plenty of firewood for sale nearby (at the campsite even), we were able to visit Durango, Ouray, and hike Ice Lakes Trail all only with a 1-2 hour drive. Theres a general store 10 minutes from the campsite with everything you might need from food (great meat selection), ice, mosquito repellant (the mosquitos were really bad, but keeping a fire going and mosquito repellant and a citronella candle helps immensely), beer, propane, and almost anything else you might need while camping. But the BEST PART.. was the customer service. I left my phone there at the bathrooms the morning we left for home in Austin, Texas and didn’t realize it until we had already been on the road for 3.5 hours. I called the San Juan National Forrest phone number I found on Google and left a voicemail, they called me back and got me in contact with Ruth Lynd and she was absolutely remarkable. She got in contact with the hosts at Vallecito Campgrounds who found my phone and arranged for her to come pick it up. She drove two hours out of her way to drive to the campsite and pick up my phone and drive to the UPS store and drop it off. I can’t recommend this campground enough, I wish I could do more than leave a review :) absolutely MUST STAY!!.

Campground hosts all excellent at what they do. Constantly helping folks with everything from fixing a generator to jump starting stranded travelers. No extra fees for pets here and many tent and RV sites available.
