This public campground serves as a gateway to exploring some of the most stunning geological formations in the region, making it an ideal destination for geology enthusiasts, nature photographers, and outdoor adventurers seeking something beyond the typical camping experience.

The Wheeler Geologic Area is renowned for its spectacular badlands-style formations featuring towering hoodoos, colorful rock spires, and intricate erosion patterns that seem almost otherworldly. What an amazing and incredible place. Definitely a hidden gem and lost monument of Colorado. If you can hike the 16-17 miles roundtrip it is definitely worth it. Once you get to this area it's like in another planet. Very alienated and cool rock formations from what is shape by a massive volcano eruption in history. You gotta see it to believe it. Very cool place.

Wheeler is not for the weak of adventure. It is a solid 2 plus hour high clearance 4x4 or 1:45 minute ATV trip one way to Wheeler. I highly recommend either going very early or planning to campout over night so you can spend most of the day exploring the area. There is so much to see you need to spend the day there. It is a 1/2 mile hike from the parking area. I have bee there on ATV and in a jeep... Wheeler is not for the weak of adventure.
