About Aspen Glade (Rio Grande National Forest, CO)

Federal campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the heart of Rio Grande National Forest, Aspen Glade offers RV campers an authentic Colorado mountain experience surrounded by towering pines and aspen groves that give this campground its memorable name. Located in the San Juan Mountains region, this national forest campground provides an excellent basecamp for those seeking to explore one of Colorado's most spectacular natural landscapes without sacrificing the comfort of their RV home away from home.

The Rio Grande National Forest encompasses over 1.8 million acres of pristine wilderness, and Aspen Glade's location puts you right in the heart of outdoor adventure country. The forest is renowned for its exceptional fishing opportunities, with numerous streams and high alpine lakes stocked with trout. Whether you're an experienced angler or someone looking to try fly fishing for the first time, the waters surrounding the campground offer accessible and rewarding experiences. The cooler mountain elevations and clean forest air create ideal conditions for summer camping when lower elevations become uncomfortably warm.

Beyond fishing, the area beckons hikers and nature enthusiasts with countless trail options ranging from leisurely walks to challenging backcountry treks. The diverse terrain includes alpine meadows exploding with wildflowers in summer, dense forest pathways, and vistas of the San Juan peaks. Wildlife viewing is another draw, with opportunities to spot mule deer, elk, black bears from a safe distance, and numerous bird species throughout the seasons.

The campground serves as an ideal launching point for exploring nearby attractions including the scenic byways through the national forest, charming mountain towns with local character, and access to some of Colorado's most remote and beautiful areas. Summer visitors appreciate the mild temperatures and lower humidity compared to other regions, while the forest setting provides natural shade and cooling breezes. The peaceful, relatively undeveloped character of this national forest camping experience appeals to those seeking escape from crowded commercial campgrounds and wanting genuine connection with Colorado's mountain environment. Whether you're a full-time RVer seeking a tranquil retreat or a weekend adventurer wanting to maximize outdoor exploration, Aspen Glade delivers an authentic mountain camping experience.

Very cozy and tranquil campground hidden in a gorge far below the road! The lower sites by the river are nicely spaced a roomy with lots of large evergreen trees and shade! The campground hosts were very friendly and welcoming to guests! Looking forward to staying at this campground again on a future visit to the area!

A very nice campground, well set up, close to the river. Very clean campsites. All in all, a gem, but what made it memorable was meeting Mike, the camp host. When I first pulled in, I didn't see any open sites by the river and when I pulled up the hill, I met Mike. He explained there were no open sites left, but after chatting for awhile, he told me he was going to let me have one that had been previously reserved, but the folks had left a day early and since I was only there for one night, he would let me have the spot and on top of that, not charge me for the site, since the folks that left had already paid for it and wanted it to go to someone who could use it. Mike, I really appreciate your kind gesture and your friendly attitude. We need more folks like you!

This place was the perfect layover for me traveling from Great Sand Dunes to Mesa Verde. First come first serve, find an open campsite, then register and drop money in the mailbox thing. Beautiful site, a bunch of families having a good time but wasn’t noisy by any means. The river is incredible and there were hardly any bugs which blew my mind. 10/10 would recommend

Just finished a 5 day stay at Aspen Glade. I believe this campground is one of the nicest spots along the Conejoes River in this area. More ponderosa pines than many of the other campgrounds. More ponderosa pines than many of the other campgrounds. Very nice, level sites. Clean vault toilets. The camp hosts are great. Mike is a character and what I like to call, casually professional, with a good sense of humor. Both excellent attributes to ensure your stay is a success. The only downside was the fishing. Unfortunately the river was high and muddy so even trying every day I failed to get a single strike. No one else fishing had any better luck so disappointed at such a bust. The saving grace was the beautiful location making it all worthwhile.
