About LAKE FORK(RIO GRANDE NATL FORE

Federal campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the heart of Rio Grande National Forest, Lake Fork offers RV campers an authentic Colorado wilderness experience far from the crowds of commercial campgrounds. This national forest destination showcases the rugged beauty of southern Colorado's high country, where towering peaks meet pristine alpine meadows and crystal-clear mountain waters.

The landscape surrounding Lake Fork is characterized by dramatic mountain scenery, with elevations that provide cool summer temperatures even when lower elevations swelter under heat. The forest itself is a mix of evergreen stands and aspen groves that create natural shade and shelter for your RV site. The quieter, more rustic nature of this national forest camping area appeals to travelers seeking solitude and genuine mountain immersion rather than developed resort-style amenities.

The Rio Grande National Forest is known for its exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities that extend well beyond your campsite. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels traverse the surrounding landscape, ranging from gentle walks to challenging alpine adventures. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the mountain streams and lakes that dot the area, offering opportunities to catch trout and other species in some of Colorado's most scenic settings. Wildlife viewing is common throughout the forest, where visitors might encounter elk, mule deer, and various bird species in their natural habitat.

The location provides excellent access to Colorado's diverse attractions and natural wonders. The surrounding region offers hot springs, geological formations, and historic mining areas that reflect the region's rich heritage. Nearby mountain towns provide supplies, dining, and services while maintaining small-town Colorado charm.

Lake Fork is ideal for RV campers who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor adventure over modern conveniences. This destination appeals to nature lovers, fishing enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone seeking to experience Colorado's mountains in a more primitive and authentic setting. The national forest environment provides the kind of peaceful mountain refuge that makes RV camping special, where starry nights and mountain air remind visitors why they love the open road and natural spaces.

Nice spot along the river (Don't expect to fish this section of the Conejos as it runs very fast here). Sites are well spaced and there IS water via an old timey hand pump, but there is no support from the private company contracted to service the sites. No cleaning of firepits, no tissue paper in toilets. The company is happy to sell you firewood as they drive around in the evening but they don't... Very nice campground. No water despite what the Recreation.gov site states. No campground host, no trash removal, and no TP in the toilets so come prepared.

Requires 15 + miles of dirt road and its a 10k high elevation but so beautiful! No potable water but good vault toilets.
