About Lower Hermosa (CO)

Federal campground in Colorado.

Lower Hermosa National Forest Campground offers RV enthusiasts an authentic Colorado mountain experience nestled in one of the state's most scenic regions. Located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, this forest campground provides the perfect base for exploring some of Colorado's most dramatic landscapes and outdoor recreation opportunities.

The campground sits at an elevation that rewards visitors with crisp mountain air and stunning views of towering peaks and dense coniferous forests. The surrounding terrain is characterized by lush evergreens, alpine meadows, and the gentle sounds of nearby water features that define the Colorado high country experience. Whether you're seeking solitude or adventure, the natural setting here creates an atmosphere of peaceful retreat while remaining accessible for RV travelers.

The Hermosa area is renowned for its exceptional hiking and outdoor recreation. Trails ranging from easy nature walks to challenging alpine hikes branch out from the campground, offering options for all skill levels. Mountain biking enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities on nearby trails, while anglers appreciate the fishing prospects in local streams and waters. The region's elevation and northern exposure create a cooler climate that's particularly appealing during summer months when lower elevations become uncomfortably warm.

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad provides a unique journey through spectacular canyon scenery that many visitors consider a must-do experience. The area's mining heritage is woven throughout the region, with historic towns and sites telling stories of Colorado's colorful past.

This location appeals to travelers seeking genuine mountain camping without sacrificing RV convenience. Families enjoy the safe environment and natural playground, while couples appreciate the romantic mountain setting. Adventure seekers and nature photographers find endless opportunities to explore and capture the beauty of the San Juan Mountains. Really well kept campground, nice campsites that offer good privacy. Direct access to Hermosa Creek trail. Great place to camp with the family and do some riding.

This review is based on me driving through and not staying a night here. The road in is about 5 miles off the 550 and is a little rough and windy but doable with a trailer..this place was empty except a camp host who never came out of his camper to acknowledge us and 2 tent campers that were staying days beyond the date on the post. It looked a little sketchy so I would not come back here to stay... This review is based on me driving through and not staying a night here. I did not camp here, but I did enjoy a handful of miles on the trail. There's something unbelievably amazing about hiking through a Grove of mature ponderosa pines. It's important to note, that the ponderosa pine only germinates (its seeds) after a forest fire. If there is no fire, then the forest will eventually die, it will not regenerate unless there is a fire. The unbelievable amount of tree regeneration was stunning. The deciduous oaks, and the new pine growth were evident, this is truly a healthy forest, and it is wonderful that the fire came through to begin the cycle of forest life once again.
