About Mosca

Federal campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the heart of Colorado's San Isabel National Forest, Mosca offers RV campers an authentic mountain experience in one of the state's most scenic regions. This national forest campground serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the diverse landscapes and outdoor adventures that make Colorado such a treasured destination for travelers seeking genuine connection with nature.

The location puts you in proximity to some of Colorado's most iconic destinations. The Great Sand Dunes National Park lies within reasonable driving distance, offering visitors the chance to witness one of North America's most unusual natural wonders. Imagine towering golden dunes set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks, a landscape so surreal it feels almost otherworldly. Beyond the dunes, the surrounding mountain terrain provides endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife observation. The elevation and forest setting create a refreshing escape from summer heat, with crisp mountain air and shade from towering conifers.

The Mosca area is particularly appealing to those who value a quieter camping experience over developed resort-style facilities. The national forest setting attracts outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate the rawer side of camping life. Families looking to disconnect from screens and reconnect with each other find this location perfect for that purpose. Photographers are drawn to the dramatic mountain vistas and changing light across the landscape throughout the day. Anglers appreciate the nearby water resources, while hikers enjoy the network of trails that crisscross the region.

The broader San Isabel National Forest spans hundreds of thousands of acres, meaning there's always new territory to explore during your stay. Spring brings wildflower displays, summer offers comfortable mountain temperatures, fall provides stunning aspen color changes, and even winter camping is possible for those equipped for it. Whether you're planning a long weekend escape or an extended mountain retreat, Mosca provides the peaceful forest setting and proximity to major attractions that make for memorable RV adventures in Colorado's high country.

Very well located. Came here for one night as I didn't want to stay two nights at sand dunes. Opted for a car camp the first night here and it was the way to go. The campsite was very clean, we got there at there were plenty of spots available at 9pm. John was able to receive us and check us in. I would highly recommend staying here. The only downside is no running water in the bathrooms but other than that the outhouses were plenty clean.

This is a Colorado (State) SWA campground with well over 100 sites suited for most RVs. Electric 20/30/50, fire ring and covered picnic table are available on each site. Most sites are very level. Dumpster and "dry" dump located at the entrance. 5G with T-Mobile att Metro PCS and (probably) Verizon. Must pack in water...(NO WATER). Walmart and Safeway in Alamosa. The lake is extremely low and often dry. The campground is located in San Luis Valley so be prepared for sandblasting winds(awning @own risk)Beautiful 360' view of snow capped mountain ranges. 14 day minimum. Campground open year-round. Recommend buying an annual Colorado SWA pass which covers all swa sites throughout Colorado for 56$ per person at Mosca store or pay 10$ per day per person (under 16 free) at Mosca store. All first come sites. Rarely fills up. Just a few miles from Sand Dunes NP.. 17 miles from Alamosa.. 1 hr north to Salida..2 hrs north to Leadville. The camp host has been there for years. Very clean, safe and quiet. This is our go to when traveling through that area. Please pick up after yourself ...many sites but only one camp host.

Awesome campground if you're looking to go to the Dunes. It's free (!!!) & each campsite has a charging station - it's an outlet with multiple sockets that work for RV charging or your phone! Some sites had picnic tables & others had canopies - from what I gathered all of them had firepits with grates. The only bummer was the ants, but we didn't notice them in our tents just at the picnic table. Y... Awesome campground if you're looking to go to the Dunes. The only bummer was the ants, but we didn't notice them in our tents just at the picnic table. You can walk around to the San Luis lake too. The view of the stars is absolutely breathtaking at night - it feels like a map of the constellations is 50ft from your head. This campground was maybe a 10min drive to the entrance of the Great Sand Dunes park? I recommend it to every friend when they go to the Dunes.
