About Woods Lake

Federal campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the heart of Colorado's pristine wilderness, Woods Lake offers RV campers an authentic mountain retreat far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This National Forest campground provides the perfect base for exploring some of Colorado's most breathtaking landscapes, where towering pines frame crystal-clear mountain vistas and the air carries the refreshing scent of alpine forests.

The setting itself is what makes Woods Lake special. Located in a quiet corner of the National Forest, the campground sits in an elevation zone that creates mild summers perfect for outdoor recreation. The surrounding terrain offers endless opportunities for hiking, with trails ranging from leisurely walks perfect for families to challenging mountain routes for experienced adventurers. Anglers will find Woods Lake itself inviting, with opportunities to fish in peaceful waters surrounded by natural beauty. The lake's calm morning surface reflects the surrounding peaks, creating an almost meditative quality that draws visitors back year after year.

Beyond the immediate campground area, this location puts you within reach of Colorado's iconic mountain experiences. The broader National Forest region features numerous scenic drives, historic mining areas, and alpine meadows that burst with wildflowers during summer months. Wildlife viewing is common here, and patient observers often spot deer, elk, and various bird species throughout the day. The relatively remote location means that night skies remain wonderfully dark, making stargazing from your RV site a highlight of any visit.

Woods Lake appeals to a wide range of RV travelers. Families appreciate the accessible recreation and the chance to unplug from technology in a safe, managed setting. Retirees love the peaceful atmosphere and moderate activity options. Serious outdoor enthusiasts find it an excellent base camp for exploring the broader wilderness area. The highly-rated reviews from previous visitors speak volumes about the quality and charm of this destination. Whether you're seeking mountain solitude, outdoor adventure, or simply a place to reconnect with nature from your RV, Woods Lake delivers an authentic Colorado mountain camping experience.

Wonderful campground! Beautiful lake! Clean porta potties. Very nice camp host. Campsites are very spaced out. Lovely views. Just have to take a bumpy dirt road for about 30min to get to it. Well worth it!

Amazing and ridiculously beautiful place to camp. I think all the sites are all first come first serve. The lake and surrounding area is breathtaking. Fees are about $20 a night, but that is quite reasonable for the space you get, location, and access to bathrooms. Because the site is at about 8k feet, it can be chilly at night or during the day even in the summer. There are a couple trails in the... Amazing and ridiculously beautiful place to camp. Fees are about $20 a night, but that is quite reasonable for the space you get, location, and access to bathrooms. Because the site is at about 8k feet, it can be chilly at night or during the day even in the summer. There are a couple trails in the area that venture further into the forest that are also quite pretty. The campsite doesn't seem to get a lot of use so it's relatively private. It isn't tricky to get to but there are a couple miles of dirt road that rise in elevation and can be kind of uncomfortable in a small 2wd car. It feels pretty remote and can be tricky to get service, if that's the kind of thing you enjoy.

Compared to ouray this place was deserted, great location near telluride. Would be perfect leaf peeping season. Lake nearby. All vault toilets are locked and the bathrooms are infact porta pottys. Treated Running water, atleast 4 spigots I believe. Lots of hiking, access for horses too.

Beautifu, secluded, and has great camp hosts (2025). It is well maintained throughout. Other than the rough Forest Service access road to get to it, this campground is great! P.S. Cash or check only; don't believe the Recreation, gov instructions about payment. Cell service is weak, so no credit card or online payments work or are accepted.
