The elevation ranges from around 6,000 to over 12,000 feet, creating diverse ecosystems and dramatic scenic vistas that shift with the seasons.

The Yampa River watershed that gives this district its name is a crown jewel of the region. Outdoor recreation possibilities are virtually limitless for RV travelers. Hiking trails range from gentle nature walks to challenging alpine treks, offering something for every skill level and interest. Fishing enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities in both the Yampa River and numerous high-country lakes stocked with trout. During winter months, the area transforms into a haven for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Mountain biking trails wind through the forest, providing thrilling rides through stunning scenery.

The nearby communities of Steamboat Springs and Craig provide convenient access to supplies, dining, and services while maintaining the area's backcountry character. Steamboat Springs, just a short drive away, is renowned for its hot springs, cultural attractions, and outdoor recreation hub status. The town offers a pleasant contrast to forest camping, with excellent restaurants, shopping, and entertainment options.

This area appeals to RV travelers seeking authentic natural experiences and willing to venture beyond heavily developed campgrounds.
