About Bear Lake Campground

Campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the heart of Colorado's scenic mountain landscape, Bear Lake Campground offers RV travelers an authentic gateway to high-altitude adventure and natural beauty. Located along Blue Lakes Road, this campground provides an excellent base for exploring some of Colorado's most treasured outdoor destinations and experiencing the rugged charm of mountain camping.

The surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. The Blue Lakes Road corridor itself is renowned for its stunning alpine scenery, with dramatic mountain peaks, pristine forests, and the crystal-clear waters that give the region its name. This elevation offers a refreshing escape from the heat of lower elevations, making it particularly appealing during Colorado's warm summer months. The cooler mountain air and longer daylight hours create ideal conditions for hiking, fishing, and exploring the backcountry.

Bear Lake Campground's location provides easy access to some of Colorado's most celebrated hiking trails and natural attractions. The surrounding national forest offers countless opportunities for day hikes ranging from moderate walks to challenging alpine treks. Fishing enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities in the nearby lakes and streams, where mountain trout populations thrive in the cold, clean waters. Wildlife viewing is another highlight, with opportunities to spot mule deer, elk, marmots, and various bird species that inhabit the high country.

The mountain community atmosphere makes this an ideal destination for families looking to disconnect from daily routines and reconnect with nature. Whether you're seeking solitude in a peaceful mountain setting or planning an active outdoor adventure, the area surrounding Bear Lake Campground delivers both. The quiet evenings under Colorado's expansive starry sky and the tranquil mountain mornings create memorable experiences that capture the essence of RV camping in the Rockies.

This location works particularly well for RVers who prioritize access to natural attractions and outdoor recreation over elaborate on-site amenities, making it perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in Colorado's mountain wilderness while enjoying the comfort of their RV.

Great place to get away & enjoy the fresh air. Took a couple of hikes in the area. Both campgrounds were clean. I didn’t use any of the latrines (used my RVs facilities). Stayed in site #1 which was a pull-thru site. Road up to CH was in good shape. I would also say ~30’ RV would be max size. Sites are not that big to accommodate bigger RVs. Sites are not that big to accommodate bigger RVs. Host (Scott(?)) was very friendly & helpful answering questions. Arthur (USFS) was also helpful answering questions & actually spoke to along one of my hikes. Thanks to both these guys for making stay that much better!! Something I would remind those going camping here & reason for 4-star rating, the wind here can be harsh. If you look around, you will see the effects it has had on the landscape. One night I was there, the wind blew most of the night. It even shook my trailer enough to wake me up. So, be aware & probably want something better than your average Walmart tent.

Beautiful camp ground, sites are spread out. There is a little creek running thru the campground. The lake is a very close walk from the campsites. Restrooms, dumpsters, and bear boxes for food are provided. So many trout! Great fishing spot.

Finally reopened after a SEVERE blow down 3 years ago. Be prepared for a lot different place now than what was previously here, yet still lovely and beautiful. Cold windy day at Bear Lake outside Cuchara, CO. Elevation is around 10,400 and the road to Blue and Bear lake is well maintained. We caught a couple of fish and released them. Camp sites are primitive with vault toilets. It was a great day to visit the area after leaving Santa Fe Trails Ranch, Trinidad, CO this morning.
