About La Junta KOA Journey

Campground in Colorado.

Nestled in the scenic landscape of southeastern Colorado, La Junta KOA Journey offers the perfect home base for exploring one of the state's most underrated regions. Located along Highway 50, this well-positioned park provides easy access to the natural wonders and cultural attractions that define the Arkansas River Valley.

La Junta itself is a charming small town with genuine Colorado character. The area is rich in history, serving as an important stop along historic trade routes. Visitors will find the town's downtown area welcoming, with local restaurants and shops that reflect the authentic character of rural Colorado. The surrounding landscape features dramatic rock formations, rolling terrain, and wide-open spaces that exemplify the beauty of southeastern Colorado's high plains transitioning to mountainous terrain.

The region offers exceptional opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Arkansas River runs through the area, providing scenic beauty and recreational possibilities for those interested in fishing, rafting, or simply enjoying riverside walks. Nearby, you'll discover numerous hiking trails that wind through stunning Colorado countryside, offering varying difficulty levels for both casual walkers and serious hikers. The natural landscape provides ample opportunities for photography, wildlife viewing, and experiencing the quieter side of Colorado away from crowded tourist destinations.

For history enthusiasts, the area presents fascinating cultural experiences. The region's rich heritage spans from Native American history to pioneer and railroad era attractions. Several museums and historic sites within reasonable driving distance offer insights into Colorado's past and the development of southeastern Colorado.

The climate here is typically pleasant, with lower elevation meaning milder winters compared to higher mountain areas. This makes La Junta KOA Journey an appealing destination for those seeking to escape colder weather or enjoy extended camping seasons.

Whether you're a full-time RV traveler seeking a peaceful retreat, a family looking for outdoor adventure, or someone interested in exploring less-visited parts of Colorado, this location provides an excellent stopping point. The small-town atmosphere combined with natural beauty and easy access to outdoor activities makes it an ideal base for discovering southeastern Colorado's unique appeal.

What a great year-round RV park! We rented the patio site with a dog pen. It was perfect for our needs and a great price. The restroom and showers were very clean. Very nice KOA staff! It was only a few minutes to La Junta, it was great not having to drive far for anything. We will definitely stay here again! We did not need to use their Wi-Fi our T-Mobile Wi-Fi box worked great.

The park itself was nice and the spot we were in was pretty secluded, which was good; however, we paid extra for the paw pen but couldn’t use it because our dog could slip through the pickets. When designing these pens, please take into consideration that dogs do come in all shapes and sizes. A solution to remedy the existing pens would be something like chicken wire along the bottom of it. It’s a really easy fix and fairly inexpensive. One other issue we had was dog poop all along the fence line. There has got to be some way to get people to pick up after their animals. The trains were nice and the proximity to Walmart and Village Inn was an added bonus.

Loved our stay once again. We visit La Junta every summer and the campground is beautifully maintained, cabins absolutely sparkling clean, and in a perfect location. I wanted to give 5 stars for the service but I guess that would depend on what time you find yourself interacting with the employees. In the mornings the woman working seems very condescending at times and unnaturally slow and out of it at other times. If you happen to be by in the afternoon however, there is an older woman that is absolutely wonderful and another woman always on the go but so kind!! We love staying at this KOA and will be back again next year. Can't wait to see the progress made on those railcars!!
