About Cumberland Island National Seashore Camping Permits

Federal campground in Florida.

Cumberland Island National Seashore offers a unique and unspoiled coastal camping experience that transports visitors to a world where pristine beaches, maritime forests, and wild horses roam freely. Located along Florida's northeastern coast, this remarkable destination provides RV campers with access to one of the most ecologically significant barrier islands on the East Coast, where nature remains beautifully wild and largely undeveloped.

The island itself spans over 36,000 acres of protected land, creating an environment where the rhythms of nature dictate the pace of your stay. The camping experience here is distinctly different from typical RV parks, as it emphasizes environmental stewardship and authentic outdoor immersion. Visitors arrive by ferry, which means the journey itself becomes part of the adventure, separating you from the hustle of mainland traffic and modern distractions. Once there, you'll find yourself surrounded by Spanish moss-draped live oaks, salt marshes, and expansive beaches where few other people venture.

What makes Cumberland Island particularly special is the abundance of wildlife encounters. You may spot wild horses grazing along the shoreline, loggerhead sea turtles nesting on beaches, and a remarkable variety of bird species throughout the island's diverse habitats. The seashore provides excellent opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, fishing, and simply enjoying the solitude that comes with camping in a protected natural area. Beach walks reveal shells, sea glass, and the geological layers of this ever-changing coastal landscape.

The nearby town of Saint Marys offers charming waterfront dining, local shops, and boat rentals for those interested in exploring the Cumberland River and surrounding waters. History enthusiasts will appreciate the island's rich past, including remnants of historic structures that tell stories of earlier eras. For photographers, the island's natural light and unspoiled scenery create endless opportunities for capturing memorable images.

This destination appeals to travelers seeking authentic nature experiences, families wanting to teach children about coastal ecology, photography enthusiasts, and anyone yearning to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with the natural world.

The park was a beautiful place to watch the sunrise. The camping was amazing, with all the amenities for a motorhome/rv. You feel like you’re wild camping due to the space between the sites, with lots of birds and wildlife. Managed to get a glimpse of an armadillo foraging at night

I solo tent camped here for one night in September. The campsites were large, shaded, and surrounded by beautiful trees. It was quiet, peaceful and I felt very safe as a solo female traveller. The boardwalk to the beach was absolutely stunning at sunset and the park itself was very clean and spacious. The bathroom facilities were also clean and well maintained. I highly recommend this park for cam... I solo tent camped here for one night in September. The campsites were large, shaded, and surrounded by beautiful trees. This is an exceptional state park. The sites are private and level with water and 30-amp electricity at every site. (50 amp available also) The restrooms are well maintained, there are laundry services, recycling, and a dump station. We didn't use the trails due to mosquitoes, but the beach is beautiful!

I don't know how many times, we visited Saint Augustine. This time, we decided to visit Anastasia State Park. We had a wonderful time, at the beach. Clean beach, no many humans, but a lot birds around us. The kids had a blast. They have parking, showers, bathroom and tables for picnics.
