About Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge Overnight Camping Permit

Federal campground in Florida.

Nestled in the heart of one of America's most remarkable natural treasures, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge offers overnight camping that immerses you in a landscape unlike anywhere else. This vast swamp ecosystem spanning over 400,000 acres across Florida and Georgia provides an authentic wilderness experience that appeals to nature enthusiasts, photographers, birders, and anyone seeking genuine connection with the natural world.

The refuge centers around the Okefenokee Swamp, a pristine wetland system that has captivated visitors for generations. The name itself comes from the Creek Indian word meaning "land of the trembling earth," a fitting description for this dynamic environment where water, vegetation, and wildlife create an ever-changing landscape. When you camp here, you're not just visiting a park—you're entering an ecological wonder that supports diverse wildlife including alligators, manatees, black bears, and hundreds of bird species.

The camping experience at Okefenokee offers visitors multiple entry points and ways to explore. Whether you're paddling through narrow waterways in a canoe, hiking along scenic trails, or simply observing wildlife from designated viewing areas, every moment reveals something new about this unique ecosystem. The refuge provides structured overnight camping opportunities that allow you to experience the magic of the swamp during both day and night, when the sounds and activity of the wildlife reach their peak.

This destination appeals particularly to those who love outdoor recreation and natural history. Photographers find endless subjects in the stunning landscapes, from sunrise reflections on still water to wildlife encounters that seem to belong in a nature documentary. Families looking for educational adventures discover that camping here teaches children about wetland ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation in the most engaging way possible—through direct experience. Serious birders recognize Okefenokee as a premier destination, with opportunities to spot sandhill cranes, herons, egrets, and numerous other species throughout the seasons.

The surrounding region of south-central Florida offers additional attractions and services. The nearby town of Folkston, Georgia, and other communities provide supplies and amenities while remaining close enough that you're never far from civilization if needed. The area's climate, with its warm days and the cooling influence of the water, creates ideal conditions for outdoor activities throughout much of the year, though seasons do affect which wildlife species are most active and visible.

Camping at Okefenokee creates memories that last a lifetime. There's something profoundly moving about spending a night in a place where the landscape has remained essentially unchanged for thousands of years, where the rhythm of nature still dictates the pace of life, and where human presence feels properly humble before the vastness of creation.

Amazing experience from start to finish. Our guide was outstanding, extremely knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the refuge and its wildlife. I also loved learning that they offer kayaking options that let you venture deeper into the wilderness, including backcountry camping sites for those who want a more immersive experience. Highly recommend this place if you enjoy nature, wildlife, and learning from guides who really know their stuff.

We drove one hour from Jacksonville, Florida and it was utterly worth it.

A beautiful area with a good diversity of life. Birdwatchers may find Red-cockaded woodpeckers here. The Chesser homestead give a glimpse into life as far back as the mid-1800s.

The 90 minute boat tour is well worth it. Nick, our guide, did an excellent job of explaining the history as well as pointing out the variety plant and animal in the swamp
