About Chattooga River District

The Chattooga River Ranger District covers 261,035 acres in the northeast part of Georgia. Terrain ranges from the Piedmont in the southern part of the district to Georgia's second highest mountain, Rabun Bald at 4,696 feet above sea level. To the east is the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River. In the central part of the district are Lake Burton, Seed Lake, and Lake Rabun where you'll find the Rabun Beach Campground. In the western part of the district are the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River

Nestled in the heart of Georgia's scenic mountain region, Chattooga River District offers an authentic outdoor camping experience for those seeking to reconnect with nature. This public campground serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring one of the Southeast's most beautiful waterways and the surrounding wilderness that has captivated outdoor enthusiasts for generations.

The Chattooga River itself is the crown jewel of this area, a pristine waterway that flows through dramatic gorges and lush forest valleys. The river is renowned among paddlers for its whitewater rapids, ranging from gentle Class I sections perfect for beginners to challenging Class IV rapids that draw experienced kayakers and rafters. Even if you're not an adventurous paddler, the river provides excellent opportunities for fly fishing, wading, and simply enjoying the soothing sounds of moving water from scenic overlooks and riverside trails.

The surrounding landscape offers endless exploration opportunities. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels wind through old-growth forests where you'll encounter diverse wildlife and seasonal wildflowers. The region's elevation provides cooler summer temperatures compared to lower Georgia areas, making it a refreshing escape during hot months. The forest canopy creates a peaceful atmosphere perfect for those seeking solitude and natural beauty.

This area appeals to a wide range of travelers. Outdoor adventurers come for the whitewater activities and challenging hiking trails. Families appreciate the accessible trails, swimming holes, and the chance to teach children about river ecosystems. Retirees enjoy the scenic drives, gentle nature walks, and peaceful riverside settings. Photography enthusiasts find endless subjects in the dramatic landscapes, cascading water features, and wildlife.

The nearby communities provide convenient access to supplies and services while maintaining the region's natural character. The Chattooga River District sits within a region rich in Appalachian culture and history, offering insight into traditional mountain life and heritage. Whether you're planning a week-long adventure or a peaceful weekend retreat, this campground provides the perfect base for experiencing Georgia's mountain country at its finest.

🌲🔥 5-Star Camping Experience! 🔥🌲 My family and I camped over Thanksgiving at Chattooga River Lodge Campground, and we absolutely LOVED it! Even though it’s listed as a tent site, our small 20 ft camper fit perfectly, and we were able to hook up to power easily using a converter. 🙌🚐 The owners were extremely responsive by text, which made everything smooth from start to finish. We enjoyed the peaceful creekside trail, and the location couldn’t be better — waterfalls, Stumphouse Tunnel, Tallulah Gorge, plus the great shops and restaurants in Clayton and Dillard, GA were all just a short drive away. 🏞️🛍️🍽️ It did rain on Tuesday and brought in a cold front, but being able to order firewood and having Willey’s Tavern right on-site made the chilly weather fun and cozy. 🍻🔥 💯 Highly recommend this campground for anyone wanting a relaxing, scenic mountain getaway!

My wife just brought me a double cheeseburger with pepper jack and jalapeño! Best burger by far! Patties were done and still pink in the middle! Soon good!
