This campground is subject to closure when the area is dry and during times of high fire risk. No dogs or pets are allowed at this campground to protect endangered nene.

Nestled in the heart of Hawaii, Kulanaokuaiki offers a unique camping experience that brings you closer to the islands' natural beauty and authentic character. This public campground provides an excellent base for exploring one of Hawaii's most compelling regions, where volcanic landscapes meet lush tropical vegetation and ocean vistas unfold at nearly every turn.

The campground itself sits in a location that captures the essence of Hawaiian geography. You'll find yourself surrounded by the distinctive terrain that makes this island chain so geologically fascinating. The area around Kulanaokuaiki is characterized by native Hawaiian vegetation, dramatic volcanic formations, and sweeping views that remind you why these islands captivated explorers and settlers for centuries. Early mornings at the campground often bring mist rolling through the valleys, creating an almost mystical atmosphere that few mainland camping destinations can replicate.

What makes camping here particularly special is the access to some truly remarkable natural areas. The region offers numerous hiking opportunities ranging from short walks to more challenging treks, allowing visitors to experience Hawaii's diverse ecosystems firsthand. You'll encounter native plants, learn about the islands' volcanic history, and potentially spot native bird species in their natural habitat. The terrain varies from coastal areas with ocean breezes to higher elevations with cooler temperatures and different vegetation zones.

The public nature of this campground makes it an accessible option for RV travelers seeking an authentic Hawaiian experience without the premium pricing of private resorts. It's ideal for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone wanting to explore Hawaii at a slower pace from a comfortable home base. The location provides a perfect balance between being immersed in nature and having reasonable access to services and attractions.

This area of Hawaii appeals to visitors interested in geology, botany, hiking, and cultural exploration. Whether you're a seasoned RV traveler or new to campground camping, Kulanaokuaiki offers the kind of immersive Hawaiian experience that creates lasting memories and a genuine connection to the islands.

Was great place to vamp. Had one toilet in bath rm. building. Bring your own water. No water access. Other than that nice secluded place. You don't need a permit goes on first come first serve on the camping spaces. More of a desert area.

Remote NPS camp. Windy, cold, rainy, sunny, hot, all in the space of 15 minutes. 4 campsites near parking lot, 5 others a hike in. Remote and surreal landscape. Level area for tent and picnic table on each site. Cell service spotty. No available water. Toilet at parking lot.

There are 4 or 5 walk-in sites at the back that offer more privacy and a more natural setting. It was a bit chilly and rainy but we woke up to a gorgeous rainbow spanning the sky.

This was a great quiet spot. Much warmer and drier than the NP's north campground with all walk-in spots. There are even 4 very secluded spots further over the hill with better views.
