Deep Creek Campground: A Serene, Free Riverside Escape Deep Creek Campground, located outside Salmon, Idaho, offers a tranquil and free camping experience (no fee currently in 2025). The surroundings boast a surprising abundance of butterflies, birds, and wildflowers, making it a beautiful natural retreat. Campsites & Amenities: There are three unnumbered campsites arranged in a line down the river. The two end sites are more exposed and less used, while the middle site, which was utilized, offers more tree cover. All sites feature level parking spots, fire pits, and picnic tables. While firewood was hard to come by, it was present. The toilets are old but are as clean as possible for their age, though they do have an unpleasant smell. Water & Connectivity: Panther Creek flows by the campground as a clear, clean, and warmish riffle, providing a soothing sound for those who enjoy flowing water. For connectivity, Starlink internet worked well at this campground. Getting There: Accessing the campground requires careful navigation. Google Maps may direct you via Moccasin Creek Road to Napias Creek Road; however, the much better-maintained Deep Creek Road (the 101) is the recommended route. Napias Creek Road is notably one of the worst forest service roads. A Note on Panther Creek: Panther Creek, originating in the Salmon River mountains, has a remarkable redemption story. Once severely impacted by cobalt and copper mining, extensive restoration efforts since the 1990s have brought the stream back to near pre-mining health. Aquatic insects are rebounding, and salmon and steelhead have returned, a testament to significant environmental recovery.

Great out of the way place to stay for 5 days while we explored the Panther Creek area. Very rustic with clean forest service pit toilets.

That is literally one of the nastiest toilets I've ever used.
