About Hells Canyon - Oregon/Wallowa Valley

The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (HCNRA) straddles both sides of the Snake River in both Oregon and Idaho. The recreation sites and trails in this section are all found away from the Wild and Scenic Snake River in the Oregon uplands, and in other forest lands near the Wallowa Valley. All other upland sites and all trails in the Hells Canyon NRA - Snake River, or Hells Canyon NRA - Idaho are found in those recreation area sections.Popular recreation areas include the Hells Canyon Wild

Nestled in the dramatic landscape where Oregon and Idaho meet, Hells Canyon offers RV campers an extraordinary gateway to one of North America's most spectacular natural wonders. This public campground serves as the perfect base camp for exploring the deepest river gorge in the United States, where the Snake River has carved an awe-inspiring chasm through ancient granite walls rising nearly a mile above the water.

The Wallowa Valley region surrounding this area is renowned for its rugged beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. Campers here find themselves immersed in a landscape of towering peaks, pristine wilderness, and authentic frontier character. The valley itself is dotted with small towns that maintain their genuine charm and local character, providing supplies and services without the commercial overdevelopment found in many popular camping destinations.

For those seeking adventure, Hells Canyon delivers in abundance. Jet boat tours penetrate deep into the gorge, offering perspectives impossible to achieve from land. Hiking trails of varying difficulty wind through the surrounding wilderness, providing access to hidden viewpoints, historic mining sites, and encounters with native wildlife including bighorn sheep, eagles, and mountain goats. Fishing enthusiasts find excellent opportunities in both the Snake River and backcountry alpine lakes.

The landscape tells stories of Native American heritage, gold rush history, and the rugged determination of early settlers. Visitors can explore this rich cultural tapestry through local museums, historic sites, and interpretive trails that reveal the human drama alongside the geological grandeur.

This location appeals to RV travelers who crave authentic wilderness experiences rather than developed resort amenities. It's ideal for families seeking quality time in nature, adventure enthusiasts ready to hike and explore, and anyone wanting to disconnect from routine and connect with something genuinely wild and beautiful. The changing seasons offer distinct experiences, from spring wildflowers to summer hiking to fall colors reflecting in the river.

Closest place to camp with hookups for Hells canyon fishing has a boat ramp. Shouldn't give it five stars it's already hard to get a spot. I stay here once a year for a week. Spots are easy to get in and out of I just dont know if you can pull in another way because my power cord is not long enough. You may not have water if it's to cold. You may wake up to a group of dear.

This is a well maintained site. There is a single shower, flush toilets, well watered and maintained lawn/grass areas. The RV spts here are simple roadside camping. There are not sites as much as they are wide parking spaces. Tent spaces are large and spacious but not very flat with most of them on a hillside. It's a pretty view of the lake and mountains. There is a dump station across the road.
