About Henrys Lake Boat Access

Henry's Lake lies high in a mountain bowl (elev. 6,470 feet) 15 miles from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. With a backdrop of Sawtell Peak, the shallow lake is known for its trout fishery. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River originates here, just below the Continental Divide between Idaho and Montana. The South Shore Boat Access has an undeveloped boat ramp, primitive camping, fishing, and a wildlife-viewing platform. Additionally, this is stop along the Idaho Birding Tra

Henrys Lake Boat Access offers a wonderful escape for RV enthusiasts seeking authentic outdoor recreation in the heart of Idaho's beautiful high country. Located near the Montana border in southeastern Idaho, this public campground provides direct access to one of the region's premier fishing destinations and a stunning alpine landscape that attracts visitors year-round.

The lake itself is the centerpiece of the experience here. Henrys Lake spans over 17,000 acres and is renowned throughout the region for its exceptional fly fishing opportunities, particularly for cutthroat trout and lake trout. Whether you're an experienced angler or someone who simply enjoys being near pristine water, the lake provides endless opportunities for recreation and relaxation. The boat access at this campground makes it convenient to launch watercraft and explore the lake's many coves and fishing spots. Beyond fishing, the clear waters invite swimming, boating, and wildlife watching from the water's edge.

The surrounding landscape captures the essence of Idaho's wild beauty. Towering peaks frame the lake, and the area sits at significant elevation, offering crisp mountain air and the kind of starry nights that make RV camping memorable. The nearby mountains provide scenic vistas and hiking opportunities for those who want to explore beyond the campground. The Island Park area nearby offers additional attractions, including the Island Park Village with its local shops and dining options, though the real draw here is the natural environment.

This location appeals particularly to fishing enthusiasts, water sports lovers, and travelers seeking peaceful mountain scenery away from crowded tourist areas. Families appreciate the safe, accessible waterfront setting, while retirees find it an ideal spot for extended stays during the fishing season. The public campground atmosphere creates a community feel among visitors who share a passion for outdoor recreation and natural beauty.

Summer is the prime season when the weather is most pleasant, though fall brings its own charm with cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. The combination of excellent fishing, beautiful natural surroundings, and convenient boat access makes Henrys Lake Boat Access a destination where RV campers can truly disconnect and immerse themselves in Idaho's outdoor heritage.

The lake is stunning, with sparkling waters framed by a breathtaking mountain backdrop. From the moment we arrived, the welcoming staff at the entrance made our visit even better, offering helpful tips on what to see and do. The park is very well managed and organized, with clean restrooms (though without running water), a spacious RV park, plenty of picnic sheds, and well-maintained campsites. One word of caution—be aware that the lake has leeches. Our 5-year-old had a brief leech encounter while playing in the water, which was quickly handled but worth keeping in mind if you’re wading or swimming. Overall, it’s a beautiful, peaceful, and family-friendly spot—perfect for a quick visit or a longer stay. Highly recommended!

Beautiful mountain lake RV sites are well spread out. Facilities are very nice kind of pricey at $80 a night but it’s only 20 miles from West Yellowstone gate to the park. I stay here every couple of years and always enjoy my time. Woke up to see two moose cows 15 yards from my RV. Once in a lifetime experience!!

Great picnic, lake recreation place. There is a campground with mini cabins and camping sites. They have fishing, kayaking , boating , swimming , picnic table pavilions as well. The rocks are very small so it’s easy with water shoes. We ate lunch here and played in the water with the kids. We did not go in the campground, but it looked very nice. The staff at the booth was very friendly and eligible. It did cost dollars for a day pass (cheap) . There are restrooms available plus a handicap accessible picnic area. The views are amazing as the lake is surrounded by mountains and fields of sage brush which smells amazing. As you pull in, there is large field of kettle down in the valley, but the mountains in the background. Definitely worth a stop. They have kyack rentals as well. There is a nice boat launch as well, with fishing pole rentals.

Trash is picked up daily from 7:00-9:00 Am, just leave in a bag at your campsite sign. Firewood is expensive so bring plenty! Fishing is excellent, but that means the bugs are also very thick so bring netted enclosures and plenty of spray 30 minutes to West Yellowstone entrance but there will be a wait to get in. Go before dawn to avoid this. Watch for wildlife on the road!! Like REALLY watch it. Don't speed and at night I'd suggest going at least 5 under.
