About Milner Historical Recreation Area Campground

Campground in Idaho.

Milner Historical Recreation Area Campground offers RV travelers a unique blend of outdoor recreation and regional history in the heart of Idaho's Snake River valley. Located near Burley, this public campground serves as an ideal base for exploring one of the Pacific Northwest's most significant irrigation landmarks and the natural beauty surrounding it.

The Milner area holds tremendous historical importance to Idaho and the broader American West. The Milner Dam, constructed in the early 1900s, represents a pivotal moment in the region's development and remains a fascinating destination for those interested in engineering history and water management. The dam created Milner Pond, a scenic water feature that dominates the landscape and provides opportunities for fishing and wildlife viewing. The campground's proximity to this historical site means you're camping in a place where you can literally touch the history that shaped the region.

Beyond the historical attractions, the location offers genuine recreational appeal. The Snake River in this area is well-known among anglers, particularly those pursuing sturgeon and various warm-water fish species. Birdwatchers will find the riparian habitat around Milner Pond rewarding, with opportunities to spot eagles, osprey, and numerous waterfowl species throughout the year. The relatively undeveloped nature of the area means you'll experience darker night skies than many campgrounds, perfect for stargazing on clear Idaho evenings.

Burley itself is a working agricultural community that provides essential services and supplies. The town maintains a genuine small-town character while offering grocery stores, restaurants, and fuel stations within convenient driving distance. This makes Milner Historical Recreation Area practical for extended stays while maintaining that peaceful, away-from-it-all camping experience.

The area appeals particularly to history enthusiasts, fishing families, nature photographers, and anyone seeking a quieter camping experience off the main tourist circuits. Spring and fall typically offer the most pleasant weather, though the location is accessible year-round for hardy RV travelers. Whether you're interested in the engineering marvels of the early 1900s, quality fishing opportunities, or simply enjoying the high desert landscape of southern Idaho, this campground provides an authentic and enriching base for exploration.

My trip took me southeast towards Texas from Washington. I found this place on the second night of our trip. Be aware that Google maps shows both a Milner Recreation Area Campground and Milner Recreation Area. We went to the campground first and found a place that would be great for RVs and travel trailers but we were tent camping. We then found the Recreation area that boasted 26 spots. We stayed... We went to the campground first and found a place that would be great for RVs and travel trailers but we were tent camping. We then found the Recreation area that boasted 26 spots. We stayed in spot 23 and it was amazing. It's right on the river with great swimming access and it's private. The site offered plenty of shade to set the tents in. We found no trash or anything else at the site and my kids had a blast.

Didn’t see any feces or diapers, so not sure about the other poster’s experience. I found the site to be very peaceful and serene. Woke up in the morning to the sound of geese honking. Had good cell service.

Quiet campsites along the Snake River. Some sites include a dock. There are two boat ramps. Super clean bathrooms.

Fun times. Nice camp spot. Caught a few bass. Weather was nice other than our heat wave. A lot of flies.

Campground is full of trash. It is also infested with flies. There were feces and used diapers at several sites. There were few options for level ground for tents. It might work if you have an RV and don't plan to get out.
