About Shoup Bridge Recreation Site

The BLM Shoup Bridge Recreation Site is a small, convenient campground that accommodates both RVs and tents located on the main Salmon River. The site is named after George Shoup, the first Governor of Idaho, who later became a U.S. Senator. The area is shaded with cottonwood trees and is a popular launch site for rafters and anglers. Only hatchery steelhead, identifiable by a clipped adipose fin, can be kept and barbless hooks are required.

Shoup Bridge Recreation Site offers a serene riverside camping experience in the heart of Idaho's scenic backcountry. Situated along the pristine waters of the Main Salmon River, this public campground provides an ideal base for travelers seeking authentic outdoor adventure without sacrificing comfort and accessibility. The setting is quintessentially Idaho—dramatic canyon walls, dense coniferous forests, and the constant soothing sound of flowing water create an immersive natural environment that instantly transports visitors away from the everyday.

The recreation site's location along the Salmon River makes it exceptionally attractive for fishing enthusiasts and water sports lovers. The river is renowned for its salmon and steelhead populations, drawing anglers from across the region during peak seasons. Even if fishing isn't your primary interest, the water itself invites exploration, whether through float trips, kayaking, or simply wading on warm afternoons. The river corridor also offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, with deer, elk, and various bird species frequently spotted throughout the area.

Beyond water-based activities, the surrounding landscape beckons hikers and nature photographers. The canyon setting provides numerous trails of varying difficulty, from gentle riverside walks to more challenging backcountry routes. Spring and early summer bring wildflower displays that paint the meadows in vibrant colors, while fall transforms the aspen and cottonwoods into golden vistas. Winter camping is possible for those experienced with cold-weather outdoor recreation.

The Main Salmon River region is steeped in Idaho history and natural heritage. This area represents the type of undeveloped, authentic camping experience that many RV travelers seek—a place where you can disconnect and reconnect with what matters most. The campground attracts a mix of fishing enthusiasts, river rafters, families seeking quiet getaways, and adventure-minded travelers exploring central Idaho's remote regions.

This location serves as an excellent launching point for exploring the broader Salmon River country, including access to wilderness areas and scenic byways. The relatively peaceful atmosphere compared to more developed parks makes it particularly appealing for those valuing tranquility and natural beauty over extensive amenities.

Nice NRA campground on Salmon River. $15 per night but using the America the beautiful pass it was $7.50 per night. NHU's but I did see a fresh water pump. Each site did have a fire ring and picnic table. The town of salmon has quite a few gas stations, very nice laundromat and a grocery market. We ate breakfast at Wally's - very good!

A bit closer to the highway than most campsites, but paved parking and around the tables, green grass and right next to the river. $5 for the night, vault toilets with potable water available. Highway traffic wasn't bad and after being on the bike all day a place to sit and unwind was a great break. Ground wasn't super hard, tent stakes went in with no issues. 4 stars for the noise factor, but...
