About Toston Dam Rec Site

This area contains two water-oriented recreation sites. Upper Toston Dam campground is located just above Toston Dam on the Missouri River Reservoir, and Lower Toston Dam campground is just below the dam on the free-flowing river. This reach of the river is a popular fishery for rainbow and brown trout. Wildlife frequent the area, and waterfowl, eagles, hawks, cormorants, and pelicans are common sites. Motorboats can be used above the dam on the small reservoir. Lewis and Clark named the canyon

Toston Dam Recreation Site offers a peaceful riverside camping experience in central Idaho, where the Missouri River provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxing getaway. Located near the small town of Toston, this public campground sits in a region of Montana known for its natural beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities, and genuine small-town charm. The area around the dam creates a picturesque setting where visitors can enjoy the gentle sounds of water and wide open skies typical of the Northern Rockies.

The recreation site is particularly appealing for those seeking a quieter camping experience away from the hustle and busier tourist destinations. The Missouri River is a major draw for many visitors, offering opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and simply enjoying the natural rhythms of river life. Anglers often find their way here, as the river in this region is known for trout and other fish species that attract both casual and serious fishermen. Even if fishing isn't your priority, the river provides a serene focal point for camp activities and evening relaxation.

Toston Dam itself is a modest structure with historical significance to the region, and the recreation site developed around it offers visitors a chance to appreciate Idaho's water management and outdoor heritage. The region provides access to various hiking trails, scenic drives, and natural areas that showcase the diverse landscape of the state. This is a super cool often overlooked spot. Short drive down gravel great early season spot. Many cool little spots to walk including bridge over river and foot access to the top of the dam which is getting to be rare.

It's good for a night or two. No shenanigans happening. Mostly fishing people and boaters in and out. The BNSF trains are shuffling around up and down the track. Only heard one in the middle of the night but was not bothersome to me. Reminded me of grandmas' house as a child and the Erie Lakawana screeching around; memories. I didn't have a mosquito problem but at dusk those silly flying bugs form... It's good for a night or two. No shenanigans happening. Mostly fishing people and boaters in and out. Just a nuisance more than anything. Lots of birds and fish jumping around. I am completely content watching pelicans all day.

Only like six campsites, 5 mile gravel dusty road, Dam has lights, so not great for stargazing. Secluded, free, quiet, except for the could train that passes 4 to 6 times/day.

Was a beautiful area, on the Missouri River. But! There’s a train almost every hour that blows it’s horn atleast 5 times directly across the River from you. I’ll also mention there’s no cell signal there.
