About BLACK ROCK

Federal campground in Idaho.

Nestled in the heart of Idaho's stunning backcountry, Black Rock National Forest campground offers RV travelers an authentic escape into some of the most pristine wilderness the state has to offer. This hidden gem provides the perfect balance between accessible camping and genuine outdoor adventure, making it an ideal destination for families, couples, and solo travelers seeking a genuine connection with nature.

The campground sits surrounded by towering pines and natural rock formations that give the area its distinctive character. The landscape here is quintessentially Idaho—dramatic, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful. Whether you're watching the sun filter through the forest canopy or gazing at star-filled skies unmarred by light pollution, Black Rock delivers the kind of natural beauty that makes RV camping so rewarding. The air is crisp and clean, and the peaceful sounds of the forest create a perfect backdrop for genuine relaxation and rejuvenation.

This location serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring Idaho's remarkable outdoor offerings. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels wind through the surrounding forest, ranging from gentle nature walks suitable for families to more challenging treks for experienced hikers. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby water access, while photographers will find endless opportunities to capture the region's natural splendor. The area's elevation provides cooler temperatures during summer months, making it a comfortable retreat when lower elevations become uncomfortably warm.

The nearby towns and communities offer essential services and supplies, ensuring you won't feel too far removed from civilization while still enjoying that coveted sense of wilderness escape. The region is less crowded than many popular camping destinations, which means more peace and quiet for those seeking genuine solitude or intimate family camping experiences. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound for those patient and observant enough to appreciate Idaho's native fauna in their natural habitat.

Black Rock National Forest campground appeals to RV travelers who value authenticity, natural beauty, and the freedom to explore at their own pace. Whether you're planning a weekend retreat or an extended stay, this Idaho destination delivers the kind of camping experience that reminds us why we love the open road and the great outdoors.

We'd give 5 stars to this campground next to water if it wasn't for the long windy bumpy dirt road you need to take for about an hour or so (depending if you're towing) from Idaho City. We'd give 5 stars to this campground next to water if it wasn't for the long windy bumpy dirt road you need to take for about an hour or so (depending if you're towing) from Idaho City. The campground itself is small, but beautiful and pretty quiet, has clean restrooms, trash service, access to water and a very close private white sanded beach on the North Fork of the Boise River. We booked campsite #3, single family but it was so large that we could have fitted a few more tents in there if we really wanted to. Campsite #1 is closest to the river and the nice beach, also pretty private, but further away from restrooms & water. Hiking trails a mile or so away, lots of ATV & mountain bikes around too. Do be aware of rattle snakes especially with small children, they're popular uninvited camp-guests. We'd probably be back, after the memories about the long bumpy roads subsides.

Great campsite on the river. Decent shade depending on the spot. Site 1 has the best beach access.

This was a great campground but there was a rattle snake in the camp close to #1. I saw another review about rattle snakes and didn't really believe it since I have never seen a rattle snake in my camp before. Needless to say he won't be bothering anyone anymore but I'm sure there are more so you should watch your dogs and kids. The river is great and lots of shade. Fishing was good too.

Stayed one night on the motorcycle. I think i was in camp site 5 close to the road. It was still quite and great for hanging my hammock. The other sites closer to the river where bigger and looked good for RV and bigger families. I was able to find firewood pretty easy. Bathroom was clean and stocked. It might get a little dusty and noisy in the busy summer times. I would return.
