About KIRKHAM

Federal campground in Idaho.

Nestled in the heart of Idaho's magnificent national forest lands, Kirkham offers RV campers an authentic escape into nature's embrace. This national forest campground serves as an ideal basecamp for those seeking to experience the rugged beauty and outdoor adventures that central Idaho is famous for. The surrounding landscape features dense evergreen forests, clear mountain streams, and pristine wilderness views that stretch across thousands of acres of protected public lands.

The location provides excellent access to some of Idaho's most cherished natural attractions and recreational opportunities. Anglers will find themselves in paradise, with nearby streams and rivers offering opportunities to pursue trout and other native fish species. The cooler mountain elevation and abundant water sources create an environment where wildlife thrives, offering patient observers chances to spot deer, elk, and various bird species throughout the seasons. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels crisscross the surrounding national forest, ranging from leisurely afternoon walks to more challenging backcountry expeditions for experienced trekkers.

What makes camping at Kirkham particularly special is the sense of solitude and connection to the land that the national forest setting provides. Unlike developed RV resorts, this campground maintains a more rustic character that appeals to travelers seeking authentic outdoor experiences. The forest canopy offers natural shade and cooling, which is particularly welcome during Idaho's warm summer months. Evening campfires provide the perfect setting to share stories and enjoy the peaceful quiet that comes with being away from urban noise and light pollution.

The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader region's natural wonders and outdoor pursuits. Whether you're a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a family looking to introduce children to camping adventures, the national forest setting offers something meaningful. The mountain air, the sound of running water, and the sight of towering pines create an environment where stress melts away and the simple pleasures of RV camping become paramount.

This campground is right next to Kirkham Hotsprings, one of the best hot springs in Western USA. Campground has pit toilets and sometimes running water. Not many sites and they usually fill up on the weekends. Reservations are recommended.

Even though there is no camping you will access the hot springs from Kirkham camp ground. Park outside the campground and go around the bars and walk straight ahead and it will run you into the 1st pool, then go right and there will be more on your left. You will come to a bridge that will take you to that river. Before the bridge there is a trail that goes up to the left and will take you to some more pools. If you take this trail make sure both hands are free, some parts of the trail is slippery. I know this because I slid and my phone went into a running hot spring and scratched up my left side. Bring water and sun screen. Clean when I was there, will recommend.

We camped at Kirkham hot springs again this August and were even more impressed with the area than we were a year ago. We arrived just in time to eat dinner and clean up after a long 12 hour drive from the St. Joe River. I walked down to the springs at 10 PM with my flash light and soaked in a hot pool for 15 minutes. The following day, our family of 4 and our companion family of 9 kids and 1 a... I walked down to the springs at 10 PM with my flash light and soaked in a hot pool for 15 minutes. The following day, our family of 4 and our companion family of 9 kids and 1 adult stayed in the hot springs on and off from 10 AM to 5 PM. I have never found hot springs as magnificent as the cascading hot water that lands on you like a professional masseuse. It's amazing. It was the high point of our 4 week camping trip.
