About Wise River Ranger District

At the heart of the forest, this district has several campgrounds, picnic and other recreation areas to explore.

Nestled in the heart of Idaho's pristine wilderness, Wise River Ranger District offers RV campers an authentic escape into some of the most beautiful backcountry the state has to offer. This National Forest destination provides an incredible setting for those seeking solitude, natural beauty, and genuine outdoor adventure without the crowds and commercialization of typical RV parks.

The Wise River Ranger District spans a vast area of protected forestland, characterized by towering pine and fir trees, clear mountain streams, and wide-open vistas that speak to the soul of any nature lover. The landscape here transitions beautifully through seasons, from wildflower-dotted meadows in spring and summer to golden aspens in fall and snow-covered peaks in winter. This dramatic scenery makes it an exceptional destination for photographers, hikers, and anyone wanting to disconnect and reconnect with the natural world.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the possibilities are nearly endless. The area is crisscrossed with excellent hiking and biking trails ranging from easy nature walks to challenging mountain routes. Fishing opportunities abound in the Wise River and surrounding streams, making this a premier destination for anglers seeking cutthroat trout and other native species. Wildlife viewing is exceptional throughout the district, where you might encounter deer, elk, black bears, and numerous bird species in their natural habitat. The elevation and forest coverage create a cool, refreshing climate even during summer months, making this an ideal escape from hot, crowded lowland areas.

The RV camping experience here is distinctly different from developed parks. You'll find yourself immersed in genuine forest camping, where the sound of running water and rustling leaves replaces traffic noise, and starlit nights reveal the incredible clarity of the mountain sky. This is the perfect setting for families wanting to introduce children to backcountry camping, couples seeking romantic getaways in nature, retirees exploring Idaho's mountain country, and adventure seekers ready to venture beyond typical tourist routes.

The surrounding region offers additional exploration opportunities. Nearby mountain towns provide supplies and services, while the broader area features historic mining sites, scenic byways, and access to wilderness areas that showcase Idaho's remarkable natural heritage. The Wise River Ranger District represents an opportunity to experience Idaho as it has existed for generations, relatively untouched and magnificently wild.

Located along the Scenic Byway between Wise River & Polaris, MT. *There are no pull thru sites here.* One of my favorite campgrounds in the area. Sites 1-2 are actually a combined spot that is great for groups or single large 5th Wheels/ToyHaulers/RV's. Two picnic tables & two fire rings. The rest of the sites are singles & there is also a few day use picinic sites. Pros : Quiet, low thru traffic,... Pros : Quiet, low thru traffic, the wise river flows along the east side, decent fishing, clean sites, fresh water via hand pump, 2 newer updated outhouses & close enough to the town of Wise River if you want to let someone else do the cooking. Cons : Only one I can think of is the lack of trees which means very limited shade. Things To Do : Fishing, visit Coolidge Ghost Town and/or Crystal Park, access to several high altitude mountain lakes via the Lacey Creek or Odell Trailheads & of course floating/fishing the beautiful Big Hole River. Things To Know : A mere $8 per night to stay, mosquitoes are usually terrible mid June thru July & all the campgrounds in the area will be filled up on holiday weekends. Thanks !!
