About YAAK MTN. LOOKOUT RENTAL

Federal campground in Idaho.

Nestled in the remote and pristine wilderness of northern Idaho, Yaak Mountain Lookout Rental offers a truly unique camping experience for those seeking to escape the everyday hustle and reconnect with nature. This national forest property provides an authentic escape into some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain the Pacific Northwest has to offer, making it an ideal destination for adventurers, nature lovers, and anyone yearning for genuine solitude in the great outdoors.

The Yaak Mountain area is characterized by dense forests, dramatic mountain vistas, and the kind of peaceful silence that seems increasingly rare in our modern world. This region sits in one of the most pristine ecosystems in the Northern Rockies, where wildlife thrives and natural beauty surrounds you in every direction. The elevation and location provide cooler temperatures even during summer months, making this an excellent retreat from sweltering heat found in lower elevations. The mountain air is crisp and clean, and the night skies offer spectacular stargazing opportunities far from any light pollution.

This location appeals to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers will find themselves in paradise, with countless trails winding through old growth forests and leading to breathtaking overlooks. Fishing opportunities abound in nearby streams and rivers, and the rugged terrain provides excellent exploration for those with adventurous spirits. During fall months, the changing colors create a painter's palette of golden and crimson hues across the landscape.

The remote nature of Yaak Mountain means you're stepping away from crowds and commercial development, which is precisely what many travelers seek when venturing into national forest lands. This is the kind of place where time seems to slow down, where you can truly disconnect from technology and reconnect with what matters most. The surrounding Idaho wilderness offers that rare combination of accessibility and authentic remoteness that discerning travelers treasure.

Directly out the door to the cabin and down the hill is an excellent huckleberry patch. We managed to pick 10 pounds in about 4 hours. There were tons left to pick. We did see a black bear and a brown bear, so you will want some sort of protection (bear mase, gun, etc.). The outhouse is decent as far as outhouses go, it works. Make sure you bring your own toilet paper, there was none when we got there. The cabin itself has 2 twin beds and two more mattresses that pull out, so it can sleep four adults comfortably. There is a built in propane lantern on the wall that is connected to a big propane tank at the base of the lookout. There is also a nice propane stove that works great and is also connected to the big tank below. There is a smaller propane grill under one of the beds that take portable propane tanks (you'll need to bring those). There is quite a bit of kitchenware/assorted goods already in the cabin, such as pots, pans, silverware, can opener, lighters, a first aid kit, lots of board games, a wash bin, broom, mop, etc. The views from the top are breathtaking and make for some spectacular photo ops. Besides the two bears we saw, we also saw some deer, some rabbits, some mice, hawks and various other birds. I would highly recommend staying here, it is just amazing.

Beautiful views. Lots of stairs. Husband built up the fire pit. Logging going on near by so going up we almost got smashed by a logging truck. Had to quickly go into reverse and back down hill to a narrow spot for the truck to pass. Had only 1 night and it was not enough to actually explore.

Breathtaking views. Epic scenery. The drive up the mountain is not for the faint of heart. It is well worth the trip to the top.

Tremendously difficult to get reservations to these, and sometimes disappointing with results. This lookout was reasonably well maintained, it’s old, so don’t be expecting it to be a 4-star hotel. Stairs are steep, so if you can’t climb 53 steps that are really closer to a “ladder” then a staircase, then don’t bother. Views are great. Bugs can be bad. No water, so bring your own. It is nice having this behind a locked gate.

Locked gate about 5 miles before the lookout. You can't drive to top.
