About Cuivre River State Park Campground 1

Campground in Illinois.

Cuivre River State Park Campground 1 offers RV travelers a wonderful escape into the natural beauty of north-central Illinois. Located in the heart of the state, this state park campground provides an excellent base for exploring one of Illinois' most scenic natural areas. The park centers around the picturesque Cuivre River, a gentle waterway that winds through deciduous forests and rolling terrain, creating an environment that feels far removed from city life despite reasonable proximity to larger communities.

The landscape here is distinctly different from the flat prairie most people associate with Illinois. Wooded hillsides, scenic river views, and diverse wildlife create a more varied topography that makes for rewarding hiking and nature exploration. The river itself is a focal point for outdoor recreation, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and simply enjoying peaceful moments by the water. Birdwatchers find the park particularly appealing, as the mixture of forest types attracts a wide variety of species throughout the year.

This location works wonderfully for RV enthusiasts who want to experience Illinois' natural side without sacrificing the comfort of their rigs. The campground setting allows you to maintain your mobile home base while having direct access to trails, water activities, and the tranquility that nature provides. Families appreciate the park's recreational opportunities, from easy walks to more challenging hikes through the forested areas. Photography enthusiasts find plenty of natural subjects, especially during sunrise and sunset when light filters through the trees beautifully.

The park's location makes it accessible for those traveling through Illinois or using it as a weekend destination from surrounding regions. The area's quiet character and natural focus appeal to those seeking a slower pace and genuine outdoor connection. Whether you're looking to fish the Cuivre River, hike through Illinois woodland, or simply camp in a scenic setting, this state park campground delivers a quality experience. The strong visitor ratings reflect the consistent quality and natural appeal that brings people back year after year to enjoy this corner of Illinois' outdoor heritage.

Spots are a little close your picnic table is right next to your neighbor's electric. The outside spots are nice and shaded, the central spots have a nice field to use. There is plenty to do with hiking, water sports, swimming, there is even an archery range.

The temperature of the lake was actually very hot. They had the swimming section netted off, but the bottom was very muddy and had lots of sticks and moss. Full hookups do not have shade and are at a 90° back up which is not easy. Lots of basic camp sites that are in the shade along with just electric spots. You can ride your bike in the campsite but not anywhere else. There was a notice on the check in booth not to swim in the local river.

Great place! The campground host is a very cool guy. The campground itself is very well maintained, plenty of space and shade for tent camping. There is a noise curfew which is nice, nothing worse than trying to have a peaceful night outdoors with someone blasting kid rock a the 100ft away. I've checked out several campgrounds in the area and this is the best. Plenty of trails nearby, a beach, and... Great place! The campground host is a very cool guy. Everyone including the staff were very friendly and helpful, staff frequently drove around cleaning and checking sites. I dropped a star for the bathrooms/showers though. They say on the doors they close for two hours a day for cleaning but the floors are nasty, there was dog hair all over the shower walls and floor, and several times the toilets were out of paper and paper and other items were all over the floors. The water in the showers was VERY hot though! 🥵
