About Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

Campground in Illinois.

Nestled along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes State Park Campground offers RV travelers an exceptional gateway to one of the Midwest's most treasured natural landscapes. Located in the Indiana Dunes region just across the state line from Illinois, this campground provides the perfect base for exploring towering sand dunes, pristine beaches, and diverse ecosystems that have captivated visitors for generations.

The Indiana Dunes represent a geological wonder where massive sand formations rise dramatically from the lakeshore, creating a landscape that feels more like a coastal destination than what you'd expect in the heartland. The dunes themselves tell a story millions of years in the making, shaped by glacial activity and the relentless forces of wind and water. As an RV camper here, you're positioned to experience these natural wonders at your own pace, whether you prefer leisurely morning walks along the beach or more challenging hikes through the dune terrain.

The campground serves as an ideal location for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a break from the ordinary. The proximity to Lake Michigan means you'll enjoy refreshing breezes and stunning sunset views over the water. Birdwatchers flock to this area to observe migratory species and resident birds throughout the seasons, making spring and fall particularly rewarding times to visit. The diverse habitat supports over 1,500 plant species, creating a botanical paradise for those interested in native Michigan flora.

Beyond the dunes themselves, the broader region offers charming small towns, local restaurants, and seasonal festivals that celebrate the area's rich cultural heritage. The location is accessible yet feels wonderfully remote, allowing you to escape the bustle of city life while remaining within reasonable driving distance of urban amenities. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventure, peaceful natural beauty, or quality time with family and friends, Indiana Dunes State Park Campground delivers an authentic Midwest camping experience that keeps visitors returning year after year.

A large electric only campground at a nice state park. Within a walking distance from the National Park and from a Lake Michigan beach. Spacious paved sites, not quite leveled, with fire rings and picnic tables. A playground, a large clean and well stocked bathhouse. The lake and dunes are spectacular and live up to the hype. The 3 dune challenge is not really a challenge if you are moderately healthy but it is fun and scenic! The cool soft sand feels fantastic, definitely best hiked barefoot. The campground itself is pretty typical of a state park- decent spacing, level sites and well kept. It is electric only but that didn't really bother us- we just showed up with the water tank full and other tanks empty and enjoyed ourselves. Our site was right between the playground and beach trailhead, but still private. The best sites are the ones on the outside from the beach trail to the nature center. These are up against the dunes and have some shade. The middle sites are more exposed and much less private. The campground was pretty full but had a nice communal family feel to it. The beach and dunes are the star of this show, but the campground is a good supporting actor.

Nice little camp store was open later than I had expected. Check in line was slow, but worth it for the location. Some sites were badly sloped, short, or difficult for large rigs to back into. We didn't have any trouble getting into our site with a 35' fifth wheel. There was enough room to disconnect and park our truck in the site. All in all, it was an extremely positive experience and we would love to go back!

Site 26e We chose a site that was very nice behind us was tree cover and we weren’t too close to other sites. The site itself was level which made parking, setting up, and hooking up the electric easy. Parking our 30 foot trailer was no problem however we did notice that there were other sites where pulling in and out might’ve been more challenging. The facilities were really well-maintained....
