Nestled in the rolling hills of northeast Iowa, Backbone State Park near Dundee offers a picturesque escape into nature that captures the essence of the Hawkeye State's rugged beauty. This beloved state park sits along the banks of the Maquoketa River, where limestone bluffs rise dramatically from the water's edge, creating a stunning natural backdrop for your RV camping adventure. With 127 well-maintained sites available from April through October, the park welcomes visitors seeking everything from peaceful riverside retreats to active outdoor recreation.

Water lovers will particularly appreciate the boat ramp facility, which provides easy access to the Maquoketa River for fishing, kayaking, or boating adventures. The river valley setting creates opportunities for morning walks, wildlife observation, and photography that captures Iowa's natural character. Fire rings and picnic tables throughout the park invite you to gather with family and friends for evening meals and stargazing, while the pet-friendly policy means your furry camping companions can enjoy the adventure too.

The surrounding area offers rich possibilities for exploration. The nearby town of Dundee provides basic services and supplies, while the broader region features scenic byways, state forests, and charming small-town Iowa hospitality. History enthusiasts will find the area's heritage intriguing, with stories of Native American presence and pioneer settlement woven throughout the landscape. Visited 10/18/2025: Very scenic and serene! Just spectacular Fall leaves and lots of different areas to see while not feeling overcrowded in any specific spot. I could see why families were out getting Fall pictures, also a large group out for a motorcycle ride and lots of families out hiking a fishing. 🎣

Beautiful winter scape. The park is very quiet, and full of wildlife. Great for a quick short hike, or a long slow trek. Dang near two different parks in one as one side of the park is cliffs and elevation changes, and the other is much more timber and around a lake walk. Dog friendly with leash!

I don’t know why I never visited during the 45 years I’ve lived in Iowa. Maybe it was the name. Sites during the fall. Amazing colors. Lots off trails. 12” trout in the streams. Cliffs, caves, park ruins, and solid camping. Not what you might call super modern RV sites, but good for small trailers, tents, and truck campers. Plenty of sites for the big ones for an Iowa park, but tight and seemingl... I don’t know why I never visited during the 45 years I’ve lived in Iowa. Maybe it was the name. Sites during the fall. Have been here several times. Beautiful and peaceful. Could use at least 1 more restroom, especially up by the auditorium or neat the springs area. Other than that - perfect!

Beautiful park! The water is so clear that it looks like the trout and other fish are floating in air. I've never seen it crowded, and it's worth the scenic drive from Cedar Rapids: right around an hour.
