About Hermit Island Campground

Campground in Maine.

Hermit Island Campground offers a quintessential Maine island camping experience that captures the rugged beauty and peaceful solitude of the Atlantic coast. Located in Phippsburg, Maine, this unique public campground sits on a genuine island accessible by a causeway, providing campers with the rare opportunity to experience true island living without leaving the comfort of their RV or tent.

The campground spans across Hermit Island, offering visitors stunning ocean views, rocky Maine coastline, and direct access to pristine beaches. The island setting creates a genuine escape from the everyday world, where the sound of waves and sea birds replaces traffic noise and urban bustle. This location is particularly special because genuine island campgrounds are increasingly rare in the Northeast, making Hermit Island a truly distinctive destination for RV travelers seeking authentic coastal Maine experiences.

The surrounding area provides plenty to explore beyond the campground itself. Phippsburg and nearby Bath are home to charming maritime history, including the Maine Maritime Museum and historic shipbuilding heritage that defines the region. The Bath Iron Works represents centuries of Maine's shipbuilding tradition, and downtown Bath offers excellent shopping, dining, and local attractions that reflect authentic Down East culture. Boothbay Harbor, just a short drive away, features working waterfront scenes, whale watching tours, and classic New England coastal charm.

For nature enthusiasts, the region offers exceptional hiking, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing opportunities. The rocky Maine coastline provides countless photo opportunities and tide pooling adventures for families. Nearby Reid State Park offers beautiful beaches and additional outdoor recreation options. The Kennebec River provides scenic views and opportunities for water-based activities.

Hermit Island Campground appeals to RV travelers who value authentic Maine coastal experiences, peaceful island settings, and access to maritime heritage sites. It's ideal for those seeking a quieter alternative to mainland campgrounds, families wanting memorable seaside vacations, and outdoor enthusiasts interested in New England's natural beauty and nautical character. The island location and high visitor ratings demonstrate why this public campground has become a treasured destination for Maine camping experiences.

Absolutely beautiful campground! Quiet and relaxing, with lots of friendly campers. We had an oceanfront site, and the sunsets felt like something out of a movie. Definitely be prepared to deal with some mosquitoes and nosey critters, but as long as you bring bug spray, and hide your food really good, you should be ok. The stunning views, and falling asleep to the sound of waves, was so peaceful.... Absolutely beautiful campground! Quiet and relaxing, with lots of friendly campers. We had a wonderful time camping here. It's absolutely gorgeous, and our site was very private. It was so fun biking around the island, and the bathrooms & showers were great. The only thing that I didn't like was the excessive mosquitos, but that has nothing to do with the campground. We went in July and stayed on the Branch. Just pack a lot of bug spray and a screen tent.

I have been coming up here on and off since the 90’s (yes the 19-90’s) and one thing I love, is over the years there has been little change! It is a quiet, peaceful place to camp and spend time away from craziness. The facilities are always clean, there’s no trash piling up around the trash cans. The campsites and beaches are well maintained. The staff are Friendly and polite. The trails are kept... No loud music at night (Outside radios are not allowed), No people “ Carrying on” all hours of the night (They have a designated quiet hour, which everyone seems to adhere to), And as much as I love dogs and critters, there are no pets allowed, So no barking dogs in the middle of the night at the numerous four -legged visitors that you will have especially if you leave food out. They have a great camp store with just about anything you would need including lobsters, clams, and oysters… they’ll even cook them for you… But you do have to shuck your own oysters. Snagging a reservation can be a bit frustrating as you have to call, and the lines always seem to be busy… Keep being persistent you’ll get through. I’ve come to think it’s just part of the experience. The views, the sunsets, The clear starry nights not blocked out by light pollution is definitely worth the price of admission. Planning a trip just to get away from everything? I couldn’t think of a better place to go.
