About Schoodic Woods Campground

Campground in Maine.

Nestled in the rugged beauty of coastal Maine, Schoodic Woods Campground offers a unique gateway to one of the most spectacular natural areas in New England. This public campground provides an ideal base for exploring the Schoodic Peninsula, part of Acadia National Park, where granite cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean and dense forests create an enchanting landscape unlike anywhere else on the East Coast.

The surrounding region is characterized by dramatic coastal scenery, with rocky shorelines, pristine beaches, and some of the most photographed lighthouses in America. The area around the campground features numerous hiking trails that wind through evergreen forests and along scenic overlooks, offering opportunities to spot wildlife including bald eagles, seals, and various seabirds. The Schoodic Peninsula itself is less crowded than other parts of Acadia, making it perfect for travelers seeking a more peaceful Maine experience while still accessing world-class outdoor recreation.

What makes this location particularly special is its combination of accessibility and authentic Maine character. The nearby town of Winter Harbor provides local shops, restaurants, and services where you can experience genuine coastal Maine hospitality. Fresh seafood is a highlight of any visit to this region, with lobster shacks and seafood restaurants serving up the day's catch just minutes away. The area is also rich in maritime history, with lighthouses and historic sites telling the story of Maine's fishing heritage and its importance to American navigation.

This campground appeals to a wide variety of travelers. Nature enthusiasts and hikers will find endless trails and scenic vistas, while photographers are drawn to the dramatic coastal landscapes and iconic lighthouses. Families appreciate the educational opportunities and relatively safe, well-maintained outdoor spaces. Retirees and couples seeking a peaceful retreat from busier tourist areas will find the quieter pace of the Schoodic Peninsula especially appealing. Birdwatchers and wildlife observers frequently choose this location during migration seasons, and those interested in geology will marvel at the ancient granite formations visible throughout the area.

The camping experience here is distinctly New England, where the crisp ocean air, evergreen forests, and rock-lined shores create a sensory experience that captures the essence of Maine's natural character. Whether you're seeking adventure on the water or trails, relaxation in nature, or cultural experiences in charming coastal towns, Schoodic Woods Campground provides the perfect headquarters for your Maine coastal adventure.

We enjoyed using the free shuttle to explore the hiking trails on the peninsula. The bike trails were challenging with loose pea stone gravel but scenic and fun.

Many MANY trails to hike, carriage roads to hike or bike, and gorgeous scenic drives. If you need a playground on site…then you should look elsewhere…but if your kids love the outdoors and using their imagination…then these spacious private sites fit the bill. We stay several times a year and still love it. No full hookups, but they have a clean dump station.

This campground is perfect for a number of reasons. It’s so quiet here. I loved being able to take trails straight out from the campground and hike the beautiful peninsula. Winter Harbor is a quick bike ride or bus ride away. Has great restaurants and somewhere to buy groceries. The landscape is incredible. You can see all wildlife ( if you have dogs watch out for porcupines) Go to blueberry hill... This campground is perfect for a number of reasons. It’s so quiet here. I loved this campground. It was spacious enough for our rig and pickup truck and the site was clean and level. No sewer hookup but not a deal breaker. It was also beautifully secluded enough that you didn't see your neighbors. We stayed at site B14. The only issue we had was the water spigot leaked. When I addressed it with the ranger she said they would take care of it but it would probably be after we left. I hated to leave the water on due to the leaking so it was a little hassle to turn the water on and off. Although we visited Bar Harbor several days, this spot is in close proximity to the town of Winter Harbor where there is a grocery store and plenty of quality restaurants! We loved driving around the loop, getting out and exploring the area as well as meeting the local folks! It's a very lovely campground and so relaxing within Acadia National Park. Definitely worth staying here and would come back again!

We have stayed at campgrounds in all four corners of the country and places in between. This was probably our favorite campground. It was quiet, clean, and private. The bathhouse (no showers) was modern and spotless. The campsites are tucked in amongst the trees and feel secluded. We picked site B-19 as a second choice and it turned out to be so much better. B-19 was a pull through, but it was long enough to make it private. If you get a chance, definitely try to stay at this campground. B Loop has electric and water connections. There are also some good hiking on the peninsula and nice bike trails. While staying at Schoodic Woods, we enjoyed visiting Bunker’s Seafood and Spirits and Musquito Brewing.
