Stayed at a primitive site but left early due to a couple reasons. Firstly, before booking the site I explained to staff I had a 12×12 canvas tent and was concerned if there was decent area to stake it. Turned out not to be the case, best spot had a substantial slope(hard to tell from photo). Kept sliding down on sleeping pad. Secondly, the outhouse looked to be older than me (I'm 50). Feces was... Feces was within a foot of toilet seat. Went to a second site to use bathroom while fishing. This outhouse had no toilet seat and was completely backed up. Staff were very friendly but if you're looking to stay at a primitive site, you might want to reconsider.

It’s wayyy out there so a great spot to get away from town. However, the two nights we stayed there was a camper next to us, no one was there all weekend- an alarm on the camper went off from 4:30am - 7am the first night and 2:30-6am. When I told the office about it they checked on the wrong camper, when at check out we told them we came to relax and get away from alarms to have a relaxing weekend... When I told the office about it they checked on the wrong camper, when at check out we told them we came to relax and get away from alarms to have a relaxing weekend they couldn’t do anything to reimburse us for the inconvenience when other campers next to us also heard it. They could have refunded one night and choose not to do anything but shrug.. they knew who owned the camper.. we were also told we had a site on the water, we did not. We usually go to Coos Canyon but they were full up & wanted to try somewhere new. Lesson learned. It was really pretty at South Arm but not worth having that issue again with no attempt to make the situation better. If they reach out I’d be willing to change my rating. But beware camping next to “lifer” campers or Rv’s that are empty.

Good campground with water sites, bathrooms with showers, rent boat or canoe, or bring your own as they have a boat launch and docks where you can rent a slip. Store sells ice and a few other things. Lake water is cooler than most other lakes, refreshing as we say.

Southarm campground in Andover Maine is a great camping experience. Remote sites are clean. Sites are far enough apart for complete privacy. Boat slips at main campground are easy to dock, plenty of firewood for sale. Bathrooms are spotless. Showers are the same. Already making plans for 2026 summer camping trip .

This place was fun. They do shut off the power during the night so keep that in mind on hot summer days. It’s very gorgeous, they have an amazing view.
