Check out the Baxter website to reserve a shelter, and the easiest Trail to the top is the saddle Trail. Make sure to budget about 2 hours per mile and take a headlamp and set a turnaround time to make sure you come off the mountain before dark!

Breathtaking views after a 3.3mile hike in from the parking area. Trail in to chimney pond is fairly straight and only a gentle to moderate climb. Many trails leave from around this area and the view is amazing, so it is understandably pretty popular, but still not over crowded. Chimney pond itself is stunning as all the pictures show. Don't forget to reserve parking early or you won't get a spot... Breathtaking views after a 3.3mile hike in from the parking area. CHIMNEY POND CAMPGROUND!!! We didnt spend a lot of time here, unfortunately. While ascending and descending to Baxter Peak on the Saddle Ridge trail we stopped by here to rest and eat Lunch as well as get pics of Chimney Pond. The Ranger at The Ranger station was nice. Hope we get the chance to camp here here soon.

Nice spot. You can save about four miles round trip off of a Katahdin attempt if you leave from chimney instead of Roaring Brook. However as of August 2018 there was no access to knifes edge trail from the campground
