About ASSATEAGUE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE CAMPGROUND

Federal campground in Maryland.

Located on the ethereal barrier island of Assateague, this public campground offers one of the most unique and memorable RV camping experiences on the East Coast. The island itself stretches across both Maryland and Virginia, creating a natural wonderland that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Campers here wake up to the sound of waves, salt air, and the distinctive calls of wild ponies that roam freely across the sandy landscapes, creating an authentic connection to nature that few places can match.

The campground provides a genuine gateway to understanding the natural heritage of the Atlantic coast. Assateague Island is perhaps most famous for its population of wild horses, descendants of animals that have lived on the island for centuries. Visitors frequently encounter these magnificent creatures grazing near the beaches and dunes, offering incredible photo opportunities and a sense of stepping back in time. Beyond the horses, the island is a haven for birdwatchers, naturalists, and anyone seeking to observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

Water activities dominate the experience here. The bay side of the island offers calmer waters perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The ocean side presents dramatic Atlantic vistas and opportunities for swimming during warmer months. The pristine beaches stretch for miles, providing endless space for exploration, beachcombing, and solitude. Many visitors spend their days collecting shells, spotting dolphins, and watching the interplay of light across the water.

The surrounding area provides convenient access to Maryland's Eastern Shore culture and charm. Historic towns like Ocean City are nearby, offering restaurants, shops, and entertainment options. Cape May, located just across the Delaware Bay, is known for its Victorian architecture and charming downtown. For those interested in maritime history, the nearby Chincoteague area in Virginia features fascinating interpretive centers dedicated to the wild ponies and island ecology.

This campground serves as an ideal base for families seeking educational outdoor experiences, nature photographers pursuing wildlife shots, birders tracking seasonal migrations, and anyone wanting to disconnect and reconnect with the natural world. The combination of accessible camping with extraordinary wildlife viewing makes Assateague Island a destination that appeals to diverse interests and creates lasting memories for all who visit.

I was in loop A in September. This was mine and my husband's first time there. For us it was an amazing experience. Just to see the horses in their natural environment was amazing. The horses would walk right into your campsite without a care. No electric or water at campsites , but it is really worth the time to go There is a couple hiking trails to walk,

National park with no hookups for RVs but still absolutely beautiful. Tent sites and RV sites. Restroom and shower are available and the toilets are no flush. The horses roam free here and have total right of way. Staff were great very friendly and helpful. Nice trails for hiking and exploring. Very quiet camping, though the park was full there was no noise.

I’ve long been a fan of the Assateague National Seashore. My recent visit reaffirmed my love for the place. I camped at an Oceanside walk-in site (not a long walk) and loved hearing the ocean as I fell asleep. There are restrooms and cold showers, all nicely maintained. The Bayside campground, which I toured, was beautiful and well kept, too. And the wild horses were a comfortable, magical part of... I’ve long been a fan of the Assateague National Seashore. Camped here on the ocean side one night in early May—it was so beautiful. We had no issues with bugs or horses. Setting up the tent with the wind was a bit of a challenge, but we adjusted with some patience and creativity. If you’re used to easy camping with lots of amenities, you’ll be disappointed, but if you’re looking for more rustic tent camping where you walk a bit, it’s a unique and beautif... My only complaint was the smell in the latrines. It would be much improved if there were signs telling people to leave the lids down.
