About Assateague Island National Seashore

Nestled near Berlin in Maryland, Assateague Island National Seashore provides 350 campsites for nature lovers. This national park campground combines convenience with natural beauty for an unforgettable camping experience.

Assateague Island National Seashore offers one of the most unique and memorable RV camping experiences on the East Coast. Located near Berlin, Maryland, this extraordinary destination combines pristine coastal beauty with genuine wildlife encounters that you won't find at typical campgrounds. The park spans a barrier island known worldwide for its wild horses that roam freely across the sandy landscape, creating an authentic natural environment where you can observe these magnificent creatures in their native habitat.

The camping experience here is distinctly different from developed RV parks. With 350 sites spread across the seashore, you'll find yourself immersed in nature rather than surrounded by manicured lawns and concrete. The seasonal operation from April through October means you're visiting during the most pleasant weather months, when the island's natural rhythms are at their most vibrant. Waking up to ocean breezes and the sound of waves creates a restorative retreat from everyday life.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Assateague Island is a playground of activities. The fishing opportunities are exceptional, with surf fishing, bay fishing, and crabbing all available to visitors. Whether you're an experienced angler or trying fishing for the first time, the waters surrounding the island provide excellent chances for catching striped bass, flounder, and other coastal species. Picnic tables and fire rings at campsites allow you to prepare fresh catches or enjoy simple meals while overlooking the natural landscape.

The island's ecosystem supports diverse wildlife beyond the famous wild horses. Birdwatchers delight in spotting numerous species, particularly during migration seasons. Hiking and biking trails wind through different habitat areas, offering intimate looks at salt marshes, maritime forests, and dune systems. The beach itself stretches for miles, perfect for walking, swimming, or simply sitting and watching the Atlantic.

Pet-friendly policies make Assateague Island welcoming for those traveling with furry companions. Your four-legged friends can enjoy the outdoor experience alongside you, though certain guidelines ensure everyone's safety and the wildlife's protection. The availability of showers and restrooms means you maintain comfort during your stay, while the dump station makes managing your RV systems straightforward.

This destination appeals to families seeking educational outdoor experiences, photographers capturing dramatic coastal and wildlife imagery, retirees wanting peaceful natural settings, and adventure seekers ready to disconnect from urban routines. The combination of accessible camping infrastructure with genuine wilderness creates something special that resonates with diverse camping preferences.

I recommend going off season for a quiet experience (as long as you’re ok with no swimming). You can see horses all over the place, as soon as you drive over the bridge! I really liked the Marsh nature trail for birding (and more horses!). I went in early Sept and there were people but it wasn’t packed, and again in November which was very quiet.

This has been a bucket list destination for over a decade! Even though I didn't get to see the motherload of ponies, I'm still thoroughly satisfied with what we did get to see! I'm disappointed we didn't find a gift shop for souvenirs, but maybe it was just the wrong time of the year! Looks like we're just going to have to come back again! 🤣

Heard about the wild horses on IG & decided in August to take a day trip to the island to see for myself. Parked at the visitor center & rode my bike across the bridge to explore & it was so beautiful & peaceful. I saw the wild horses & they seemed right at home & used to everyone. Great experience.
