About Assateague State Park Campground

Campground in Maryland.

Assateague State Park Campground offers one of the most unique and memorable RV camping experiences on the East Coast. Located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, this exceptional destination combines pristine natural beauty with genuine wildlife encounters that you won't find at typical campgrounds. The park sits on the barrier island of Assateague, famous for its wild horses that roam freely across the sandy landscape. Waking up to the sight of these magnificent creatures grazing near your RV is an experience that stays with you long after you leave.

The campground itself provides 342 sites spread across a scenic setting where pine forests meet salt marshes and sandy beaches. The location puts you right at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, with direct beach access that makes this ideal for water enthusiasts. Whether you're interested in swimming, kayaking through the marshes, or simply walking along the shoreline at sunset, the water activities are endless. The bay side offers calmer waters perfect for families and those new to water sports, while the ocean side provides the full Atlantic experience for more adventurous visitors.

Beyond the wild horses, Assateague is a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife photographers. The island is home to diverse bird species, making it excellent for birdwatching throughout the year. The salt marshes attract herons, egrets, and numerous migratory species depending on the season. Photography enthusiasts find incredible opportunities to capture both wildlife and landscape images, especially during golden hour when the light across the marshes becomes absolutely stunning.

The surrounding area offers plenty to explore when you want to venture beyond the campground. The charming town of Ocean City, Maryland is nearby with its classic boardwalk, restaurants, shops, and family attractions. History buffs will appreciate nearby Chincoteague and the cultural heritage of the region. For those seeking quieter exploration, the scenic byways and small fishing villages along the Eastern Shore provide authentic Chesapeake Bay culture.

Assateague State Park Campground works beautifully for families seeking beach camping, couples looking for a romantic coastal getaway, and outdoor adventurers wanting authentic nature immersion. The combination of accessible amenities with genuine wilderness creates a perfect balance for modern RV camping.

My wife and lucked up and snagged a last minute reservation for this past Father’s Day weekend due to a cancellation. We camped at site E112 which is conveniently located two spots from the bath house. The camp hosts Don and Ginger were right beside us and came over while we were setting up to welcome us and introduce themselves. We later saw them walking around the loop keeping the area immacula... My wife and lucked up and snagged a last minute reservation for this past Father’s Day weekend due to a cancellation. And the State campground is much more equipped, having hot showers and what appears to be better maintained facilities overall. Whether you’re in the State Park or the National Park, the beaches are phenomenal… and pristine! Unlike the beaches in OC, which are vastly overcrowded and polluted with trash everywhere. Assateague has become our annual Mecca since we moved to Maryland 12 years ago. The wild ponies, amazing sunsets and sunrises are truly spectacular. Highly recommend!

We had incredible experiences at the park last week. Beautiful, clean, well-kept beaches. We saw lots of horses. It seemed like it was going to be overcrowded because of waiting for 30 minutes in traffic but didn't feel that way at all when we made it to the beach. *Would have liked more lunch options the day we went to that side of the beach. Overall, just awesome. Highly recommend.

What a wonderful place to visit and camp at! The water was cool in July but it felt fantastic with the hot, sunny days. The camp sites are big, too! We had 4 tents and plenty of room left over for games and such. The sunrises and sunsets were gorgeous and typically when the horses come out. Good to make sure that your food is locked away at those times especially. I’ll also add it was totally fine... What a wonderful place to visit and camp at! Assateague State Park is gorgeous. It's definitely a must-see . The horses are able to roam free around the whole park, including the beach area. Due to that you can not bring food on the beach . They have a ton of camping spots right past the dunes .if you are strong enough to brave it . The campground is very open, so the wind wipes, though . The horses also roam, though, so you have to be caref... Assateague State Park is gorgeous. It's definitely a must-see .
