About New Germany State Park Campground

Campground in Maryland.

New Germany State Park Campground offers a peaceful retreat into Maryland's natural beauty, nestled in the rolling hills of Garrett County in the state's western panhandle. This well-maintained state park campground serves as an ideal base for travelers seeking outdoor recreation combined with the comforts of organized camping facilities. The park encompasses over 300 acres of pristine woodland and features a scenic 13-acre lake that becomes the centerpiece of activities throughout the year.

The setting itself tells a story of Maryland's industrial heritage. New Germany was originally a company town established in the 1870s to support nearby coal mining and logging operations. Today, visitors can explore remnants of this fascinating past while enjoying modern recreational opportunities in a gorgeously forested environment. The elevation and geography create a cooler, refreshing climate compared to other parts of Maryland, making it particularly appealing during warmer months.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the park delivers substantial appeal. Fishing on the lake draws many visitors seeking bass, catfish, and other freshwater species. The surrounding trail system provides excellent opportunities for hiking and nature walks through deciduous and mixed forests. Birdwatchers find the area rewarding, especially during migration seasons. The campground itself is thoughtfully laid out with level sites suitable for various RV sizes, and the well-kept grounds maintain a quiet, family-friendly atmosphere that many travelers appreciate.

The location positions visitors well for exploring western Maryland's broader attractions. Deep Creek Lake, Maryland's largest freshwater lake, sits nearby and offers additional water recreation, dining, and seasonal activities. The region's charming small towns provide authentic Appalachian character with local restaurants and shops. Hikers appreciate proximity to longer trails in the surrounding state forests and wildlife management areas. Winter visitors note that the higher elevation sometimes brings snow, creating seasonal camping opportunities for those seeking a different experience.

Who enjoys New Germany best? Families with children appreciate the safe, manageable lake environment and easy hiking trails. Retirees value the peaceful setting and moderate activity level. Fishing enthusiasts find consistent opportunities throughout the year. Nature lovers and photographers treasure the woodland scenery, especially during fall foliage season when the hillsides display brilliant colors. The park attracts both extended-stay visitors and those using it as a weekend getaway, making it versatile for different camping styles.

Beautiful quiet park, looks almost the same as it did from my childhood. Spent nearly every summer weekend there. There are many trails to walk with your dog, watch out for the tree roots coming up out of the ground. Peaceful and serene, it’s a must visit.

My husband and I recently had a lovely day here. We found it quiet, calm, and relaxing. The lake is not overly large or deep. There was one lifeguard in attendance during our entire stay. Clean, well-maintained public areas; beautiful scenery; bathrooms, snacks, canoe rental are within walking distance. Parking was easy. Cell phone use is NOT available. A plus if you're looking for a true get-away... My husband and I recently had a lovely day here. We found it quiet, calm, and relaxing. The lake is not overly large or deep. The cabin we were in was overlooking the lake with a 30 second walk, so the area was great as well. Only thing to note is the area has no cell service as also indicated in the booking page, but the lake house, about a minute walk away and visible from the cabin, has reliable wifi. Highly enjoyed and fully worth a visit.
